This week\u2019s Performance Of The Week, <\/span>sponsored by LumaLanes<\/span><\/a>, goes to <\/span>Bronte Campbell<\/b> for her meet record and gold medal performance in the women\u2019s 100 free<\/span><\/a> at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia this week. <\/span><\/p>\n

While it was almost a given that a Campbell would end up at the top of the podium in the women\u2019s 100 freestyle, all signs seemed to point that it would be the older <\/span>Cate Campbell <\/b>who would take Commonwealth gold. She was coming off the fastest relay split in history on the world record setting 4×100 freestyle relay (<\/span>a mind boggling 51.00<\/span><\/a>) and <\/span>sprinted to 50 free gold in a new personal best<\/span><\/a> that broke her old record from Aussie Trials by just .01. <\/span><\/p>\n

While Cate seemed poised to continue on her hot streak, Bronte had other ideas, qualifying third through semi-finals in a respectable 53.46 before blasting a new Commonwealth Games record of 52.27 to record a new personal best in finals and earn the top spot on the podium. That beat the meet record her sister had set during semi-finals by more than three-tenths and came within 2-tenths of Cate\u2019s Australian record (52.06) from 2016, which at the time was the world record in the event. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting this isn\u2019t Bronte\u2019s first time on top of the podium. She has been a presence on Australia\u2019s 4×100 free relay since 2013, and she was the individual World Champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan leading up to the Olympics. At just 23-years old the younger Campbell still looks to have plenty left in the tank, and with her sister <\/span>also swimming faster than ever<\/span><\/a> it may be a chase to see who is going to be the first Australian to break through the 52 second barrier. <\/span><\/p>\n
