COACH Frank Comfort&#39;s North Carolina Tar Heels hold the lead after Day 2 of the 2001 Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium here &#8212; site of the 1989 USS Spring Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>The Tar Heel women, defgending Atlantic Coast Conference champs, are on top with 579 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 426 and the University of Kentucky in third with 407 points. <\/p>\n<p>Carolina&#39;s men also lead with 624 points, followed by LSU second with 547 and Virginia Tech in third with 482.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Jessi Perruquet, defending ACC women&#39;s 200 free champ and a foremr Pennsylvania state All-America prepster two seasons ago, raced to a Carolina record en route to her national No. 1 clocking in the women&#39;s 200 free with a pr 1:46.24,.  Her time broke the old Carolina school record of 1:46.28 by Kari Haag, a former Tar Hell All-America, from 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Katie Hathaway won both the 400 IM and the 100 breast for the Tar Heels, while the UNC ladies won the 800 free relay too.<\/p>\n<p>Carolina&#39;s Chris Helin won the men&#39;s 400 IM and the his teammates took first in the 800 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>LSU&#39;s women scored two triumphs in individual events, with Zimbabwean Olympian Mandy Leach winning the 100 butterly and Lindsay Staak the 100 back.  Virginia Tech&#39;s women captured the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky swimmers Joey Faltraco and Roger Watkins won the men&#39;s 100 back and 100 breast, respectively, while LSU&#39;s Francisco Paez took top honors in the 200 free and Virginia Tech&#39;s Joel Cross won the 100 fly. LSU also won the men&#39;s 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Faltraco is a transfer from Coach Don Gibbs&#39; South Carolina program and is in his first year with the Wildcats.<\/p>\n<p>Competition continues at UNC&#39;s Koury Natatorium with session five beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Bill Bell<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHAPEL HILL, NC., Nov. 16.
