April 18.  ACCOLADES are pouring in from around the world for marathon swimming icon Jim Doty who passed away yesterday in the company of his family near Boston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=James_Doty\"target=\"_blank\">Doty<\/a> was inducted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imshof.org\"target=\"_blank\">International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame<\/a> as an Honour Swimmer in 2002 and served on its Board of Directors for a number of years. <\/p>\n<p>His sense of service and contributions to the sport were provided over decades. Doty was the president and treasurer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=New_England_Marathon_Swimming_Association\"target=\"_blank\">New England Marathon Swimming Association<\/a> that promoted open water swimming and hosted the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Boston_Light_Swim\"target=\"_blank\">Boston Light Swim<\/a> and numerous other from one to five mile swims.  He published booklets on swims involving tidal flows, jellyfish and pollution effects on seaweed and fish.  <\/p>\n<p>He studied the medical effects of cold water and the stress and strain on the body from long distance swimming and was always dipping into his own pocket to support the sport.  He kept entry fees at a minimum (e.g., 50 cents) that helped cover the cost of awards and food.<\/p>\n<p>As an athlete, Doty swam across or the length of most New Hampshire lakes and swam on the professional circuit in World Professional Marathon Swimming Association races in Chicago, , Chiccoutimi and Rhode Island and in the famed <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=24_Heures_La_Tuque\">24 Heures La Tuque<\/a>.  He established the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imshof.org\"target=\"_blank\">International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame<\/a> Davids-Wheeler Award in 1968, founded the Boston Light Swim in 1978 and the New England Marathon Swimming Association in 1978 as a charity organization to study water conditions, water safety and promote swimming. <\/p>\n<p>International Swimming Hall of Fame Executive Director and Curator <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Bob_Duenkel\"target=\"_blank\">Bob Duenkel<\/a> remembers him, &#8220;<i>Jim was a good friend to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Whenever he was in town, he would always stop in to the Hall for a quick hello and to check out the L Street Brownies Display. With his New England Marathon Swimming Association, he was one who saw the value of organized open water swimming<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cuttingwater.blogspot.com\"target=\"_blank\">Marcy MacDonald<\/a> also lauds the champion of the sport, &#8220;<i>A true gentleman Jim was.  Open water swimming and Boston will miss him.  I had the pleasure to know him way back in the late 1980s when I got back into swimming after college.  He always ran a safe Boston Light swim.  Thank you for your love for the water<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boston marathon swimming stalwart and race director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Boston_Light_Swim\"target=\"_blank\">Boston Light Swim<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=Greg_O%27Connor\"target=\"_blank\">Greg O&#039;Connor<\/a> said, &#8220;<i>I find myself following in his footsteps, knowing that I can never fill his shoes<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Doty conceived of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalmarathonswimminghalloffame.com\/davids-wheeler-recipients.html\"target=\"_blank\">Irving Davids-Captain Roger W. Wheeler Memorial Award<\/a> and arranged for its donation by the  <a href=\"http:\/\/openwaterpedia.com\/index.php?title=New_England_Marathon_Swimming_Association\"target=\"_blank\">New England Marathon Swimming Association<\/a> in honor of Irving Davids and Captain Roger W. Wheeler.  This award recognizes contributors to the sport of  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openwaterswimming.com\"target=\"_blank\">open water swimming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to establishing his legacy in open water swimming, Doty started his athletic career in track and was a hammer thrower and shot-putter at Harvard University.  In 1956, he finished 78th in the Boston Marathon and decided that marathoning and ultra-marathoning suited him. He started swimming long distances in 1968, training with Jack Starrett, a 1964 English Channel swimmer.
