Dressel had actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-swims-18-11-in-50-free-new-american-ncaa-record\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broken that record in prelims with an 18.11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and then took it lower <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-becomes-first-man-to-break-18-in-50-free-smashes-records\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading off Florida\u2019s 4&#215;50 free relay in a 17.83<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to officially break the 18 second barrier before he finally stopped the clock at 17.63 at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For perspective, NC State\u2019s <\/span><b>Ryan Held <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was second in 18.64, finishing 1.01 seconds back for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/no-record-safe-for-caeleb-dressel-after-17-63\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the biggest margin of victory in history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Words don\u2019t really do this swim justice, so take a moment to watch the race video if you haven\u2019t already:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aRhXKDGzeUg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite how mind-boggling a 17-second flat start 50 may seem, Dressel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/video-interview-17-63-was-the-perfect-swim-for-caeleb-dressel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted in a post-race interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his goal all along had been 17.6. \u201cI learned from each one,\u201d Dressel said, referring to his drop in each of his 50\u2019s from that day. \u201cThe relay this morning, I was 17.9 with a relay swing. There was room to improve there and I learned something from that race. I kind of got the first-race jitters out of the way.
