Competition for the 2018 Speedo Sectionals Southern Zone kicked off in Austin last night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim center. Events included the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly, and 1000 freestyle.<\/p>\n

At the end of the evening, DU Hilltoppers were sitting in first place of team rankings with 179 points. However, it’s anyone’s meet, as Jeffco Hurricanes, Highlands Ranch, and Kingfish Swimming all sit within 50 points of DU Hilltoppers. Tonight’s events will include the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 400 IM, and 800 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Freestyle<\/h3>\n

Anna Shaw<\/strong> of DU Hilltoppers touched first in a close race that was the women’s 100-yard freestyle final heat. Her time of 50.01 was 0.06 ahead of Delaney Smith<\/strong> of Highlands Ranch’s second-place time of 50.07. Third place went to Kylie Andrew<\/strong> of Foothills Swim Team in 50.13.<\/p>\n

Meredith Reese<\/strong> of Pikes Peak Athletics touched fourth in 50.45, followed by Lainee Jones<\/strong> of Colorado Springs in 51.11 for fifth place.<\/p>\n

Highlands Ranch’s Elsa Litteken<\/strong> nabbed sixth in 51,16, while Emily Barrier<\/strong> of Team Vortex (51.48), and Lillianna Brook<\/strong> of DU Hilltoppers (51.93) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
The men’s 100-yard freestyle title went to Alexei Sancov<\/strong> of Terrapins Swim Team. The USC commit touched in 43.41 to win the event over Kyle Leach<\/strong> of Colorado Springs, who finished in 44.26. Third place went to Harrison Lierz<\/strong> of Front Range Barracudas in 45.10.<\/p>\n
Seth Hendrix<\/strong> of DU Hilltoppers put up a fourth-place time of 45.29, while Andrew Trepanie<\/strong> of South Metro Storm’s time of 45.36 was good for fifth.<\/p>\n
DU Hilltoppers’ Ryan Peterson<\/strong> touched in 45.57 for sxith, followed by Sean Dwyer<\/strong> of South Metro Storm in 45.61. Gavin Olson<\/strong> of Foothills Swim Team was eighth in 45.99.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
Terrapins Swim Team’s Emily Lo<\/strong>, who will be heading to UCLA in the fall, won the women’s 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.43, about a second and a half off her prelims time. Catherine Wright<\/strong> of Pikes Peak Athletics finished three seconds later in 2:15.41 for second place, while third place went to Holley Dennis<\/strong> of Highlands Ranch in 2:15.70.<\/p>\n
Edenna Chen<\/strong> of Colorado Springs was close behind for fourth place in 2:15.87, while teammate Aleksandra Olesiak<\/strong> finished fifth in 2:16.03.<\/p>\n
14-year-old Emma Weber<\/strong>, swimming unattached, nabbed sixth with a 2:18.56, while Mary Buckley<\/strong> of Kingfish Swimming (2:19.46) and Alexandria Schwier<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricans (2:19.93) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
DU Hilltoppers earned another first-place finish with William Goodwin<\/strong>‘s win in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke. Goodwin was the only competitor under 2:00.00, touching in 1:59.85 to hold off second-place Jack Moranetz<\/strong> of Foothills. Moranetz touched in 2:00.45 for the runner-up spot. Third place went to Elijah Warren<\/strong> of Aquawolves Swimming in 2:02.42.<\/p>\n
Blayze Jessen<\/strong> of DU Hilltoppers stopped the clock in 2:02.83 to earn fourth-place honors, followed by Joshua-Ryan Lujan<\/strong> of Colorado Springs Swimming in 2:04.32 for fifth.<\/p>\n
Christopher Hardt<\/strong> of Aquastar dropped a second and a half to nab sixth place in 2:04.91, while Ryan Peterson<\/strong> of DU Hilltoppers was seventh in 2:06.62 and Benjamin Dufauc<\/strong> of Aquawolves Swimming touched eighth in 2:08.28.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n
Utah Valley Aquatics’ Makayla Cazier<\/strong> won the women’s 200-yard backstroke in a blistering 1:56.79, ahead of second-place Reese’s time of 1:57.97. Third place went to Natalie Arky<\/strong> of Highlands Rance in 1:58.06.<\/p>\n
The heat saw big time drops from prelims, as Arky’s teammate Elsa Litteken<\/strong> dropped over a second to finish fourth in 1:58.72, followed by Andrews in 1:58.96. Rylee Moore<\/strong> of Crawfish Aquatic Club was just off the 2-minute mark in 2:00.06 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Riley Tapley<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricanes touched in 2:00.97 for seventh, followed by Kingfish Swimmings’ Madison Milbert<\/strong> in 2:01.23 for eighth place.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n
Olson saw another top eight finish in the men’s 200-yard backstroke, this time the gold. His time of 1:43.40, over a half second faster than his prelims time, was good for first place. Second place went to Lierz in 1:43.94. Andrew Rodriguez<\/strong> of Terrapins Swim Team touched five seconds later in 1:48.76 for third place, just ahead of Nicholas Fox<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricanes in 1:48.87.<\/p>\n
Fifth place went to Gennady Sytnik<\/strong> of Terrapins in 1:49.62. Connor Miller<\/strong> of Kingfish Swimming stoped the clock in 1:50.22 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Trevor Van Law<\/strong> of Highlands Ranch (1:51.40) and John Paul Phillips<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricanes (1:51.68) also competed in the championship final of the event.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
Miriam Guevara<\/strong> of El Paso Aqua Posse snuck under the 2-minute mark in the women’s 200-yard butterfly for the title, touching in 1:59.89. Olivia Theall<\/strong> of Aquastar was the runner-up in 2:00.34, and Katherine Connors<\/strong> of Kingfish Swimming touched third in 2:02.40.<\/p>\n
Wright’s time of 2:03.66 was good for fourth, followed by Grace Ali<\/strong> of Kingfish in 2:03.97 in fifth. Payten Irwin<\/strong> of Front Range Barracudas stopped the clock in 2:05.26 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Jeffco’s Sydney Metzler<\/strong> (2:07.90) and Kingfish’s Ashley Loomis<\/strong> (2:08.16) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
Hendrix dropped over a second from his prelims time to win by a landslide in the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a 1:47.11. Second place went to Utah Valley’s Anthony Puertas in 1:48.61, followed by Braden Whitmarsh<\/strong> of Colorado Springs in 1:52.06. Fourth place went to Calum Lehman<\/strong> of Pikes Peak Athletics in 1:52.19.<\/p>\n
Hardt was fifth in 1:52.48, followed by Charles Burrough<\/strong> of Highlands Ranch in 1:53.02 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Trepanie (1:53.59) and Michael Dulay<\/strong> of Terrapins Swim Team (1:53.84) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

The women’s 1000 freestyle was a close battle between Loomis, Morgan Simon<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricanes, Kathryn Shanley<\/strong> of Foothills Swim team, and Kingfish’s Alexa Connors<\/strong>. Loomis and Simon were neck and neck to the end, with Loomis splitting a 28-low to close the race and take the title in 10:05.03.<\/p>\n
Simon’s time of 10:05.18 pulled her away from third-place Shanley, who touched in 10:07.21. Connors pushed to fourth-place time of 10:10.44.<\/p>\n
Fifth place went to Clare Sanderson<\/strong> of Pikes Peak Athletics in 10:18.15, followed by 14-year-old Melinda Johnson<\/strong> of Foothills Swim Team in 10:18.82.<\/p>\n
Kingfish Swimmings’ Madison Milbert<\/strong> was seventh in 10:24.02, while Lauren Vilims<\/strong> of Jeffco Hurricanes snuck into the top eight with a 10:25.21.<\/p>\n
