The first evening of finals for the 2018 Speedo Sectionals stop in Phoenix, Arizona kicked off last night at the home of Phoenix Swim Club. Events included the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly, 800 freestyle relay, and 1000 freestyle.<\/p>\n

Breeja<\/strong> Larson won two events, the women’s 100 freestyle and the women’s 200 breaststroke. Young talent abounded at the meet, with many swimmers earning Junior National A cuts.<\/p>\n

At the end of night one of competition, Scottsdale Aquatic Club sits in first place atop team rankings with 990 points, followed by Mesa Aquatics Club with 624, and host Phoenix Swim Club with 602.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Breeja Larson<\/strong>, representing NYAC, took the 100-yard freestyle title ahead of Scottsdale Aquatics youngsters Claire Grover<\/strong> and Greer Pattison<\/strong>. Larson touched in 49.21 to top second-place Grover’s time of 49.62. Both were Junior Nationals A cuts. 15-year-old Pattison was third in 50.78, a Junior Nationals B-cut.<\/p>\n

Mesa Aquatics Club’s Kyla Yetter was fourth with a 51.03, followed by Kalli Fama of Rio Salado Swim Club in 51.40 for fifth place.<\/p>\n

Olivia McPherson of Laramie Swim Club<\/strong>‘s time of 51.45 was good for sixth place, just 0.01 ahead of seventh-place Morgan Cramm-Tamisiea<\/strong> of Tucson Ford in 51.46. Audrey McDonald<\/strong>\u00a0of Park City Swimming finished eighth in 52.42, off her prelims time of 51.82.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n
The top four finishers in the men’s 100-yard freestyle all earned Junior Nats B-cuts, with Lucas Farrar<\/strong> of Lake Country Swim Team topping the field in a 44.86. Farrar was the only competitor under 45 flat, as Saint Louis University’s Grant Gamroth<\/strong> was second in 45.04. Jadan Nabor<\/strong> of YMCA Westside Silver Fins nabbed the bronze with a 45.25.<\/p>\n
Christopher Allen<\/strong> of Mesa Aquatics Club was fourth in 45.60, under the B cut of 45.79. Fifth place went to Parker Hughes<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 46.06, followed closely by sixth-place Henry Lucco<\/strong> of Una Oca in 46.08.<\/p>\n
Anthony Frakes<\/strong> of host team Phoenix Swim Club (46.10) and Jared Shaw<\/strong> of Sahuarita Stingrays (46.29) rounded out the top eight finishers in the event.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
Larson claimed her second title of the meet in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 2:04.76 blew away the competition of young swimmers; 13-year-old Mary Codevilla<\/strong> of Flatiron Athletic Club touched second in 2:12.08, followed by her teammate and fellow 13-year-old Chase Davison<\/strong> in 2:12.11 for the bronze. Both young women earned Junior Nationals A-cuts.<\/p>\n
Katie McBratney<\/strong> of Pitchfork Aquatics also snuck in under the A-cut mark with a 2:15.01 for fourth place. Haley Mayhew<\/strong> of Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team earned fifth-place honors with her time of 2:15.54, while Riley Courtney of Scottsdale Aquatic Club touched sixth with a 2:15.81.<\/p>\n
Abigail Maoz<\/strong>\u00a0of Tigard Tualatin Swim Club put up a 2:20.30 for seventh, followed by Gaby Tellez<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 2:20.99 for eighth place in the top heat.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
Former ASU swimmer Thibault Capitaine<\/strong>, swimming for Scottsdale Aquatic Club, won the men’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:58.52. Teammates\u00a0Jarod Arroyo<\/strong>\u00a0and Juan Jose Garcia Mesa<\/strong> of Pitchfork Aquatic Club both dipped under the 2:00.00 mark as well, with Arroyo earning the silver in 1:59.47, and Garcia Mesa the bronze in 1:59.48. Fourth place went to Patrick Schramm<\/strong> of Phoenix Swim Club in 2:03.46.<\/p>\n
Daniel Chevere<\/strong> of Pitchfork Aquatic Club was fifth in 2:03.71, followed by teammate Morgan Toro<\/strong> with a 2:04.30 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Evan Schaeffer<\/strong> of Mesa Aquatics Club rounded out the top heat in seventh place with a 2:06.09, as seventh-seed Denton Anderson<\/strong> of Hilltop Aquatic Club was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n
14-year-old Kennedy Noble<\/strong> of YMCA Westside Silver Fins won the women’s 200-yard backstroke in dominant fashion, dropping two seconds from her prelims time to finish in 1:57.54, a Junior Nationals A cut. Second place went to Rachel Butler<\/strong> of Cottonwood Heights Swim Team in 1:58.69, and third to Katey Lewicki<\/strong> of RallySport Aquatics in 1:58.90.<\/p>\n
Sydney Carlson<\/strong> of Phoenix Swim Club just missed the 2:00.00 barrier, finishing fourth in 2:00.32. Fifth place went to Kara Church<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 2:00.38, while Pattison dropped over two seconds from her prelims swim to finish in 2:00.76 for sixth place.<\/p>\n
Mya Drost-Parra<\/strong> of Flatiron Athletic Club touched in 2:01.37 for seventh, while Phoenix’s Kaitlyn McCoy<\/strong>, who had come in as the third seed after prelims, put up an eighth-place swim of 2:01.47.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n
University of Florida alum Yoelvis Pedrada<\/strong>, representing RallySport Aquatic Club, took the men’s 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.87, a two and a half second drop from prelims. He had been sixth heading into prelims, but had a great third 50 split to take the win.<\/p>\n
Mateja Milovanovic<\/strong> of Phoenix Swim Club and Joshua Ries<\/strong> of Hilltop Aquatic Club also dipped under the 1:50.00 mark to improve their places, with Milovanovic touching second in 1:49.21, and Ries in 1:49.94.<\/p>\n
Devin Bunnell<\/strong> of Hilltop Aquatic Club touched fourth in 1:50.16, followed by fifth-place Andrew Nixdorf<\/strong> of Lake Country Swim Team in 1:51.43.<\/p>\n
Dylan Edge<\/strong> of Desert Thunder Aquatics finished in 1:51.61, which bumped him up from eighth to sixth. William Newman<\/strong> of Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team (1:52.25) and Maxwell Deyoung<\/strong> of Laramie Swim Club (1:53.17) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n
Jordan Tiffany<\/strong> of Hilltop Aquatic Club dropped over two seconds to win the consolation final in a notable 1:49.83.<\/p>\n

Mikayla Seigal<\/strong> of Flatiron Athletic Club was the only woman to dip under the 2:00.00 mark in the women’s 200-yard butterfly, touching in a quick 1:59.88, just off the Junior Nationals A cut. Behind her was Haley Benjamin<\/strong> of Durango Swim Club in 2:02.32, followed by third-place Olivia Grossklaus<\/strong> of Mesa Aquatics Club in 2:02.63.<\/p>\n
Fourth place went to Destiny Kling<\/strong> of Pitchfork Aquatic Club in 2:02.73, followed by teammate Sydney Chun<\/strong> in 2:02.79. Sydney Carlson<\/strong> of Phoenix Swim Club was just behind in sixth with a 2:02.89.<\/p>\n
Gabby Lizzul<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club touched in 2:03.71 for seventh, while Lucille Matheson<\/strong> of Flatiron Athletic Club rounded out the top heat with an eighth-place time of 2:03.79.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
Tigard Tualatin Swim Club’s Benjamin Miller<\/strong> finished almost three seconds ahead of the field in a 1:45.88, a Junior Nationals A-cut by two seconds. He kept his third 50 split under 27.00 to blast ahead of the field and motor into the finish.<\/p>\n
Arroyo touched second in 1:48.35, followed by Skyler Younkin<\/strong> of Tri-City Channel Cats in 1:48.82 for third. Lucco was fourth in 1:49.32.<\/p>\n
Nabor touched fifth in 1:50.52, followed by Phoenix Swim Club’s Michael Niezgodzki<\/strong> in 1:50.87 for sixth.<\/p>\n

Second place went to Ellis Bohon<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 9:20.65. The race was close, with Bohon almost bringing it back on the last 100, but Babson’s great first half was too big a gap to close.<\/p>\n

Pitchfork Aquatic Club’s Arroyo, Archie Spindler<\/strong>, Garrett Chance<\/strong>, and Thomaz Martins<\/strong> put together atime of 6:39.74 to win the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay by almost seven seconds. Second place went to Terry Yang<\/strong>, Dylan Melin<\/strong>, Max Weed<\/strong>, and Stefan Cooley<\/strong> of Scottsdale Aquatic Club in 6:46.52. Third place went to Allen, Brian Rawlinson<\/strong>, Trey McDaniel<\/strong>, and Cason Flygare<\/strong> of Mesa Aquatics Club in 6:48.58.<\/p>\n
Phoenix Swim Club (6:53.26), Tucson Ford Dealers (6:56.55), RallySport Aquatic Club (7:01.84), Mesa’s B-team (7:02.68), and Rio Salado Swim Club (7:03.38) rounded out the top eight relay finishers.<\/p>\n
