The second night of the 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships saw no records fall, but plenty of exciting races at the mecca of swimming, the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.<\/p>\n
The Williams women stole the show as they got the night started with three consecutive wins. Emory women still lead the meet and the Denison men are leading after two full days of competition.<\/p>\n
Results<\/a> Emory\u2019s Oliver Smith<\/strong> brought home the title for Emory as he came home in an 18.71. That is Smith\u2019s fastest split in his career as he won the 50 for the third year in a row last night. Sage Ono<\/strong> (20.43), Trey Kolleck<\/strong> (19.66) and Aaron Schwartz<\/strong> (19.81) set up Smith as they won in 1:18.61. They were slightly off Kenyon\u2019s NCAA record of 1:18.06 from 2012.<\/p>\n MIT came in second in the final at 1:20.55 with Sam Ubellacker<\/strong> (20.56), Dane Erickson<\/strong> (20.29), Jeremy Bogle<\/strong> (20.06) and Joshua Tomazin<\/strong> (19.64).<\/p>\n The other 19 splits in the field came from Stevens Point\u2019s Reilly Donnellan<\/strong> (19.55), Kenyon\u2019s Matt Cooper<\/strong> (19.82), Pomona-Pitzer\u2019s Lukas Menkhoff<\/strong> (19.85) and Johns Hopkins\u2019 Nathaniel Davenport<\/strong> (19.91).<\/p>\n Williams\u2019 Emma Waddell<\/strong> came home in a 21.95 as she stormed through the field and stole the win for the Ephs at 1:32.48. Delaney Smith<\/strong> (24.03), Rollie Grinder<\/strong> (23.44) and Laura Westphal<\/strong> (23.06) swam for Williams as they took advantage of Emory\u2019s DQ in the prelims this morning.<\/p>\n Kenyon finished in second at 1:32.60 and early leader Johns Hopkins was third at 1:33.27. Kenyon was second with Zoe Toscos<\/strong> (23.86), Abby Wilson<\/strong> (22.83), Princess Vilan Ferguson-Nguyen<\/strong> (23.48) and Emmie Mirus<\/strong> (22.60).<\/p>\n The fastest splits outside the top two came from Johns Hopkins\u2019 Kiki Peterson<\/strong> (22.63), Pomona-Pitzer\u2019s Maddie Kauahi<\/strong> (22.89), Denison\u2019s KT Kustritz<\/strong> (23.01) and Calvin\u2019s Abby VanHarn<\/strong> (23.10).<\/p>\n There were four total swimmers from Denison in the championship final but NYU senior Ian Rainey<\/strong> won his second title of the meet with a 3:47.77. He led from start to finish and didn\u2019t let up. Rainey finished ahead of a pair of sophomores in Denison\u2019s Bebe Wang<\/strong> (3:49.70) and MIT\u2019s Bouke Edskes<\/strong> (3:52.03).<\/p>\n Denison\u2019s Matthew Hedman<\/strong> (3:52.83), Robert Williams<\/strong> (3:53.09) and Brad Stevenson<\/strong> (4:01.39), as well as consol champion Francis Biagioli<\/strong> (3:55.45) picked up valuable points for the Big Red in the event.<\/p>\n New Paltz\u2019 Cooper Knapp<\/strong> (3:55.74) and Kenyon\u2019s Colin Reardon<\/strong> (3:58.84) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n Williams freshman Molly Craig<\/strong> continued Williams\u2019 momentum into the 400 IM as she won the title with a 4:18.56. Craig used an impressive freestyle leg to run away from Ming-Fen Ong<\/strong> of Emory (4:19.80) and Denison\u2019s Erica Hsu<\/strong> (4:20.50).<\/p>\n Emory\u2019s Julia Durmer<\/strong> (4:20.59) was the early leader but fell off badly down the stretch as she finished fourth in the final.<\/p>\n Denison\u2019s Natalie Zaravella<\/strong> (4:20.70), Emory\u2019s Maria Turcanu<\/strong> (4:22.10), Carnegie Mellon\u2019s Emma Nicklas-Morris<\/strong> (4:24.82) and Amherst\u2019s Bridgitte Kwong<\/strong> (4:25.18) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n Denison had yet to pick up a win in the 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships until sophomore Kymani Senior<\/strong> won the 100 fly final. Senior had the fastest second 50 in the field as he won the final with a 48.03 ahead of Nebraska Wesleyan senior Garrett Cadotte<\/strong> (48.04) and Occidental senior Austin Lashley<\/strong> (48.28).<\/p>\n Both Cadotte and Lashley are the only swimmers at the meet for their respective schools.<\/p>\n Kenyon\u2019s David Fitch<\/strong> (48.34), Denison\u2019s Kenny Fox<\/strong> (48.41), Albion\u2019s Nate Kosycki<\/strong> (48.49), Johns Hopkins\u2019 Mark Wilson<\/strong> (48.69) and Williams\u2019 Tim Kostolansky<\/strong> (48.73) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n Williams senior Emma Waddell<\/strong> won the third event in a row for the Ephs as she comfortably won the 100 fly final at 53.39. She successfully defended her NCAA title she won a year ago. She won comfortably ahead of Grove City sophomore Anne Dassow<\/strong> (54.63) and Wash U senior Niamh O\u2019Grady<\/strong> (54.89).<\/p>\n Denison\u2019s Angela Le<\/strong> (54.94), Emory\u2019s Meg Campbell<\/strong> (55.20), Williams\u2019 Madeline Downs<\/strong> (55.33), Emory\u2019s Maria Kyle<\/strong> (55.49) and Denison\u2019s Maddie Hopkins<\/strong> (55.54) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n Johns Hopkins sophomore Brandon Fabian<\/strong> took the lead from the start and won the 200 free final at 1:36.94 to narrowly miss the NCAA record held by fellow Blue Jay Evan Holder<\/strong> (1:36.42) from 2017.<\/p>\n Fabian held off a strong charge from Bowdoin junior Karl Sarier<\/strong> (1:36.96) who came home in a 24.28 to give serious pressure to Fabian the last 25.<\/p>\n Emory\u2019s Thomas Gordon<\/strong> was third (1:37.41) as he was coming off the 500 win last night.<\/p>\n Williams\u2019 Jamie Lovette<\/strong> (1:38.12), Denison\u2019s Drake Horton<\/strong> (1:38.32), Stuart Hohm<\/strong> (1:38.32), Buffalo State\u2019s Connor Mergler<\/strong> (1:38.44) and Pomona-Pitzer\u2019s Mark Hallman<\/strong> (1:38.95) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n Emory senior Cindy Cheng<\/strong> successfully defended her NCAA title in the 200 free with a 1:46.89 on Thursday night at the 2018 NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n Cheng won in similar fashion to Fabian as she took the lead early and hung on. Cheng went 1-2 with teammate Fiona Muir<\/strong> (1:47.64), as they were joined in the final by teammate Julia Wawer<\/strong> (1:49.42) and B-Final champion Meg Taylor<\/strong> (1:49.89) as their 800 free relay looks dangerous for tomorrow.<\/p>\n But they could get pressure from Kenyon who had three championship finalists. Hannah Orbach-Mandel<\/strong> (1:48.45), Kendall Vanderhoof<\/strong> (1:49.19) and Abby Wilson<\/strong> (1:50.57), along with 10th place finisher Delaney Ambrosen<\/strong> (1:50.24) will be a force to be reckoned with in the 800 free relay tomorrow.<\/p>\n Birmingham Southern\u2019s Becca Erwin<\/strong> (1:48.74) and Williams\u2019 Laura Westphal<\/strong> (1:49.35) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n Emory successfully defended its 400 medley relay title from last year with a 3:13.97 on Friday night at the 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis. Sage Ono<\/strong> (48.08), Cooper Tollen<\/strong> (54.68), Oliver Smith<\/strong> (47.91) and Trey Kolleck<\/strong> (43.30) swam for the Eagles as they got serious pressure from Denison who was second at 3:14.64.<\/p>\n Carson Clear<\/strong> (48.48), Tiernan Foster-Smith<\/strong> (53.77), Kymani Senior<\/strong> (48.57) and Zack Wagner<\/strong> (43.82) swam for Denison as they came in the runner-up position, but still lead the team scores after two days.<\/p>\n The fastest splits outside the top two came from Johns Hopkins\u2019 Peter Lazorchak<\/strong> (48.41), Pomona-Pitzer\u2019s Lukas Menkhoff<\/strong> (53.59), MIT\u2019s Dougie Kogut<\/strong> (48.08) and Tufts\u2019 Roger Gu<\/strong> (43.44).<\/p>\n In one of the craziest races of the night, Kenyon had a monster back half and used that to win the medley relay to close the night. Kenyon swam a 3:39.95 with Caitlin Foley<\/strong> (56.14), Julia Wilson<\/strong> (1:01.36), Crile Hart<\/strong> (52.94) and Hannah Orbach-Mandel<\/strong> (49.51). Hart didn\u2019t swim the 100 fly individually but out-split champion in that event Emma Waddell<\/strong> of Williams, who split a 53.21 on that leg. No other swimmer broke 55 seconds on the fly leg in the final.<\/p>\n Emory had the early lead thanks to Cindy Cheng<\/strong>, who led off with a 53.65.
