In the 50 free prelims at the men&#8217;s NCAA championships, he swam a time of 18.11, nine hundredths under his previous American and NCAA records of 18.20.<\/p>\n<p>Dressel qualified first by more than a half-second, with NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>taking second in 18.69. Third went to Minnesota&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bowen Becker\u00a0<\/strong>in 18.88. Three others broke 19 seconds: 200 free American record-setter\u00a0<strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> (18.93), Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pwerl Sendyk\u00a0<\/strong>(18.95) and Auburn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>(18.97).<\/p>\n<p>Alabama&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Robert Howard\u00a0<\/strong>(19.00) and Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryan Hoffer\u00a0<\/strong>(19.04) also made the final.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, NC State relay hero\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>was 10th in 19.09, just ahead of USC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Santo Condorelli\u00a0<\/strong>(19.10).
