THE Washington State University women's swim team continued its strong performance so far this season, defeating Central
Washington 59-34 and Northern Illinois 54-39 at Gibb Pool, Saturday.

The Cougars dominated the competition, winning all 11 events to boost their record to 4-1 in dual meets this season. Northern Illinois defeated Central Washington by a score of 63-32.

Two Gibb Pool records by Washington State highlighted the day's competition. Andree-Anne LeRoy, a sophomore from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, broke the pool record in the 400 yards individual medley with her event-winning time of 4 minutes, 34.11 seconds.

"The goal was really to get my time down around 4:30," LeRoy said. "I started out much faster than normally, but was kind of slowing by the end of the race, so I need to pace it a little better. As for the record, it's always nice to get a record. I think our team's goal for today was to produce some fast times going into next week. I think we did that and everyone had really solid swims."

The Cougars also established a Gibb Pool record in the last event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. Washington State's team of Taryn Ternent, Lindsay Henahan, LeRoy, and Rachel Dong won the event with a
record time of 3:30.27, nearly 19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Northern Illinois.

"About halfway through the meet we looked up at the record board and noticed the old record," Henahan said. "We got together and knew we had a good shot at a record, so we just went for it. Overall, I think a lot of our athletes definitely accomplished something they had set out to do today."

Cougar sophomore Rachel Dong had a part in three WSU victories Saturday. In addition to the 400 free relay, the team co-captain from Paramount, Calif., won the 200 breaststroke and swam on the winning 400 medley
relay team.

"We came into this meet just trying to swim strong and fast, and we feel good about a lot of our performances today," Dong said. "My breaststroke was off today in my first two races. I really wanted to come back and have one good swim in the 400 free relay, so I'm pleased with that."

Taryn Ternent, a co-captain from Edenvale, South Africa, winning the 50 freestyle in 23.83 seconds, her best time of the season. Ternent also swam the lead leg on the pool record breaking 400 free relay team.

"I'm excited to see Taryn have some breakthroughs in her sprints, because we've been training her at such high volume and intensity," WSU Head Coach Rocco Aceto said.

Sasha Taylor also had a major role in the Cougars' win, claiming victory in two individual events. The sophomore from Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada, won the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.95 and the 200 freestyle in 1:57.71.

Other event winners for Washington State include junior Rebecca Cohen in the 1000 freestyle, junior Melissa Hubley in the 200 butterfly, sophomore Katie Byrnes in the 200 backstroke, and sophomore Semah
Zavareh in the 500 freestyle.

"We had a lot of breakthroughs today, which was very good for the team," Byrnes said. "I actually didn't feel that I swam my best today, but it was a good learning experience."

"I don't know if we ever accomplish every goal we set, but our main goal is to get faster while training," Aceo said. "Being able to improve while doing the work we need to do can more or less set us up for a
bright end to the season, which is still a long ways away. We're showing some good speed early in the season, which is surprising but encouraging. The team's attitude is definitely our strength. Because
our athletes are more fit, they can be happier with their performances. We need to keep level heads, and try to improve our workouts and technique each week."

WSU's next meet is against intrastate and Pac-10 Conference rival Washington. The meet begins at 7 p.m. Friday, November 16 in Seattle.

Central Washington, Northern Illinois at Washington State

Pullman, Washington

(all distances in yards)

TEAM SCORING:
Washington State (WSU) 59
Central Washington (CWU) 34

Washington State (WSU) 54
Northern Illinois (NIU) 39

Northern Illinois (NIU) 63
Central Washington (CWU) 32

RESULTS:
#1 – 400Y MEDLEY RELAY (3:49.31/3:46.05) RESULT (Pool
Record/School Record)
1.
