Stanford senior\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>swam the second fastest 100 free ever on Saturday night at the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Manuel swam a 45.65 to get just off her 45.56 American Record she set last year at NCAA’s.<\/p>\n

Manuel, overcome with emotion, got a standing ovation during her on-deck interview where she got emotional after saying it was her last individual swim for Stanford.<\/p>\n

Manuel is still the only swimmer to break 46 seconds in the event as\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>of Louisville was second in the final at 46.20 and Cal junior\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil\u00a0<\/strong>was third at 46.74.<\/p>\n

Comerford is now second all-time in the event as she moves ahead of Weitzeil in the all-time rankings.\u00a0Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>of Michigan was fourth in the race and is now tenth all-time with a 46.91. Texas A&M senior\u00a0Beryl Gastaldello\u00a0<\/strong>became the eleventh swimmer to break 47 seconds in the event as she was fifth at 46.98.<\/p>\n

Tennessee’s\u00a0Erika Brown\u00a0<\/strong>(47.08), Auburn’s\u00a0Aly Tetzloff\u00a0<\/strong>(47.58) and Cal’s\u00a0Amy Bilquist\u00a0<\/strong>(47.82) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Stanford has now won ten total titles in the event. Manuel joins\u00a0Jenna Johnson\u00a0<\/strong>(1986, 1987),\u00a0Jenny Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>(1992-1995),\u00a0Claudia Franco\u00a0<\/strong>(1996) and herself as winners for the Cardinal.<\/p>\n

This is also Manuel’s third NCAA title in the 100 free as she joins Thompson,\u00a0Leigh Ann Fetter\u00a0<\/strong>of Texas\u00a0(1989-1991),\u00a0Martina Moravcova\u00a0<\/strong>(1997-1999) of SMU, and\u00a0Kara Lynn Joyce\u00a0<\/strong>(2004-2007) of Georgia as three-time winners in the event.<\/p>\n
