AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 9. THE No. 4-ranked University of Texas women's swimming and diving team won 10 races and posted the top time in 14 out of 15 events en route to 180-120 victory over Big 12 rival Texas A&M tonight, at the Jamail-Texas Swimming Center in Austin. <\/p>\n
With the victory, the Longhorns improve to 2-2 in dual-meet competition, while A&M falls to 1-2 on the year. <\/p>\n
After winning the first 10 of 11 events, Texas swam the final four races as exhibition, taking the top
\ntime in each. <\/p>\n
The Horns were led by junior Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.) and junior transfer Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore\/California), who led the pack in three individual events each. Jamison captured first
\nplace in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.64) and the 200 backstroke (2:01.42), as well as taking the top time in the 400 IM (4:23.91). <\/p>\n
Yeo won the 100 (54.76) and 200 (2:01.74) butterfly, while also swimming the top time in the 200 IM (2:03.26). All six times qualified for NCAA 'B' consideration. <\/p>\n
Senior transfer Valerie Oswald (Charlottesville, Va.\/Virginia\/Auburn) led the way in the breaststroke events, touching first in the 100 (1:05.92) and 200 (2:19.99). Freshman Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.) took first in the 100 freestyle (51.39), while senior transfer Lauren Thies (Portland, Ore.\/Stanford) won the 1000 free (9:58.14) and junior Erin Phenix (Cincinati, Ohio) was victorious in the 50 free (23.65). <\/p>\n
"I was really happy with the team's performance today," co-head coach Mike Walker said. "It was great to have the crowd support that we had and I believe that our swimmers have taken a real positive step. The team realizes that when they stick together and work for a common goal, we can take risks in the pool and come away with a win. I hope that the team will continue to keep its intensity up the next couple
\nof weeks leading to the Texas Invitational." <\/p>\n
In diving, sophomore Ally Harzell (Austin, Texas) took charge by winning the one-meter diving competition (293.70). She was followed by UT freshmen Nicole Pohorenec (Winter Springs, Fla.) in second (264.07) and Rawson Glover (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) in third
\n(259.04). <\/p>\n
Hartzell also registered the top score on the three-meter board (300.00), with Glover (276.37) and Pohorenec (275.62) following. <\/p>\n
Texas A&M freshman Tiffany Moore captured her fourth win in the last three meets with a 4:59.40 clocking in the 500 freestyle. Moore's win was the lone A&M victory in which the Longhorns did not exhibition its top swimmer.<\/p>\n
Laura Fry and Alexandra Baldree provided a maroon-and-white sweep in the individual medley for A&M. Fry captured the 200 I.M. in 2:16.74 while Baldree claimed gold over 400 yards in 4:29.93.<\/p>\n
Two-time All-American Meghan Zack beat teammate Katie Williams 283.95 to 254.84 on the three-meter springboard. The Aggies' final win came after A&M's "A" finishing the 400 freestyle relay in 3:33.18.<\/p>\n
"They beat us pretty soundly," said head coach Steve Bultman. We're starting to come along well. We had five girls swim lifetime bests. Tiffany won the 500 and swam well in finishing second in the 1000. I was real pleased with that." <\/p>\n
With the loss, the Aggies drop to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference competition.<\/p>\n
Texas returns to action as host of the Texas Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2, at the Jamail-Texas Swimming Center. <\/p>\n
