Midwest teams continued to showcase their depth at the Pleasant Prairie stop of the 2018 Spring Speedo Sectionals series, competing in four events on the third night of finals.<\/p>\n
The lineup included the 400-meter IM, 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter breaststroke, and 100-meter butterfly. Teams also competed in the 400-medley relay.<\/p>\n
At the end of the evening, Phoenix Swimming has overtaken Barrington Swim Club in overall team rankings, with 621 to Barrington’s 608.5. Colorado Stars sit in third place for team point totals with 422.<\/p>\n
Maggie Emary<\/strong> of Barrington Swim Club, runner-up in the 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle, won the women’s 400m IM with a seven-and-a-half second drop from her prelims swim. Her first-place time of 4:57.73 was well ahead of the rest of the field, as\u00a0Emily Clements<\/strong> of Phoenix Swimming finished in second place in 5:07.21. Vanessa Herrmann<\/strong> of AquaStorm touched in 5:08.10 for third place.<\/p>\n Phoenix Swimming’s Allegra Walker<\/strong> touched fourth in 5:10.69, followed by Olivia Staver<\/strong> of Piranhas Swim Club\u00a0with a\u00a0fifth-place time of 5:14.20.<\/p>\n Sixth place went to 12-year-old Mary Grace King<\/strong> of Lake Forest Swim Club\u00a0in 5:14.53. Maria Pritchett<\/strong> of Barrington stopped the clock in a time of 5:14.81 for seventh, and Sophia Keuhn<\/strong> of Palatine Park District Swim Team\u00a0was eighth in 5:16.39.<\/p>\n The men’s 400m IM was dominated by youngsters, as 15-year-old Max Iida<\/strong> of Glenview Titan Aquatic Club\u00a0finished in 4:43.58 to win in dominant fashion. Dillon Cherwin<\/strong> of Elgin Cyclones\u00a0earned second-place honors with his swim of 4:48.63, followed by Andy Ritsema<\/strong> of Bloomington Normal Swim Club\u00a0in third place with a 4:49.26.<\/p>\n Ultimate Swimming, Inc.’s Michael Benington<\/strong> stopped the clock in 4:51.22 for fourth place, followed closely by Calvin Schilz<\/strong> of Howard Suamico Storm Breakers\u00a0in 4:51.44 for fifth.<\/p>\n Will Nash<\/strong> of Piranhas Swim Club\u00a0(4:52.69), Jeremy Throndson<\/strong> of Eastern Iowa Swim Federation\u00a0(4:55.34), and Mason Pomroy<\/strong> of Phoenix Swimming (4:55.78) finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n The women’s 200-meter freestyle saw some familiar faces of the weekend, most notably Bridget O’Leary<\/strong> of Barrington Swim Club, Emily Ecker<\/strong> of Portland Porpoise Swim Club, Maxine Parker<\/strong> of Cats, and Emary. O’Leary won the event by almost three seconds, touching in 2:03.98 to second-place Ecker’s time of 2:06.61.<\/p>\n 100 freestyle champion Parker\u00a0tied with Macy Rink<\/strong> of Bloomington Normal\u00a0for third place in the event, both posting marks of 2:07.80. Fifth place went to Emary in 2:08.53.<\/p>\n Heidi Stalkfleet<\/strong>, 14-year-old from Iowa Flyers Swim Club, touched in 2:08.62 for sixth to put her ahead of seventh-place Carol-lena Breiter<\/strong> of Phoenix Swimming and her time of 2:08.71. Isabelle Pelka<\/strong> of Patriot Aquatic Club rounded out the championship final eight in 2:08.93.<\/p>\n Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club’s Jacob Furlong<\/strong> also overtook the field\u00a0by almost three seconds in the men’s event, touching in a quick 1:53.85 for a win over second-place Trever Brenner<\/strong> of Sioux Falls Swim Team, who touched in 1:56.61. Wolfpack’s Bence Szabados<\/strong> put up a mark of 1:56.94 for third place.<\/p>\n Fourth place went to Colorado Stars’ Blake Wilton<\/strong> in 1:57.17, followed by Christian Hedeen<\/strong> of Font Du Lac Swim Club in 1:57.27.<\/p>\n Daniel Ng<\/strong> of Cats Swimming finished in 1:58.17 for sixth place, followed by Elmhurst Swim Team’s\u00a0Brendan Wagner<\/strong> (2:00.27) in seventh and Black Hawk Area Swim Team’s\u00a0Dylan Moffatt<\/strong> (2:00.35) for eighth.<\/p>\n Herrmann and Lillian Culp<\/strong> of Bloomington Normal Swim Club\u00a0fought through a touch race in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke, with Herrmann’s last 50 giving her the win over Culp in 2:41.28. Culp touched just behind in 2:41.73 to earn runner-up honors. Patriot Aquatic Club’s Hannah Liu<\/strong> stopped the clock in 2:44.61 to earn her\u00a0third place.<\/p>\n 14-year-old Eleni Gewait<\/strong> of Pleasant Prairie Patriots\u00a0touched in 2:45.20 for fourth place, followed by Walker in 2:45.93.<\/p>\n Patriot Aquatic Club’s Drew Petereit<\/strong> was sixth in 2:46.48, while\u00a0Rachel Studer<\/strong> of Dowling Catholic Riptide\u00a0(2:47.86) and South East Metro Sharks’ Chloe Wangensteen<\/strong> (2:48.88) rounded out the top eight finishers in the event.<\/p>\n Phoenix Swimming’s Maxwell Reich<\/strong> won the men’s 200-meter breaststroke in 2:19.02. Forrest Frazier<\/strong>, swimming unattached, finished in 2:21.09 for second place honors. Third place went to Iida in 2:25.59.<\/p>\n Reach Aquatics’ Alexander Schillinger<\/strong> touched in 2:28.91 for fourth. Justin Alderson<\/strong> of Peoria Area Water Wizards\u00a0stopped the clock in 2:28.94 for fifth place in the event.<\/p>\n Chicago Wolfpack’s Michael Schiml<\/strong> touched later in sixth with a time of 2:33.65, followed by Travis Hull<\/strong> of Mundelein Mustang Swim Club\u00a0in 2:34.56 for seventh, and AquaStorm’s Jayden Porter<\/strong> in 2:35.03 for eighth place.<\/p>\n The 100-meter butterfly was the last individual event of the session, and unattached Ruby Martin<\/strong> won the event easily, touching in 1:00.16. Second place went to Wolfpack’s Anna Peterson<\/strong> in 1:03.32, followed closely by Trinity Gilbert<\/strong> of Pleasant Prairie Patriots\u00a0in 1:03.50 for third place.<\/p>\n Unattached Scarlet Martin<\/strong>‘s mark of 1:04.19 was good for fourth place, while Pelka’s time of 1:04.34 earned her fifth-place honors.<\/p>\n Sixth place went to Emma Gleason<\/strong> of Patriot Aquatic Club in 1:04.97, followed by Emma Pritchett<\/strong> of Barrington Swim Club in 1:05.06. Isabel Veliz<\/strong> of Patriot Aquatic Club closed out the\u00a0top heat in eighth place with a1:05.21.<\/p>\n The men’s event was a close race within the championship heat, with Riley Darling<\/strong> of Green Bay Swim Club\u00a0coming out on top in 55.97. Second place went to Wilton in 56.17 after a full\u00a0second drop from prelims, followed by a hair by Szabados in 56.18.<\/p>\n Parker Nolan<\/strong> of Chicago Wolfpack put up a 56.28 for fourth place, while teammate Ezra Mizgala<\/strong> finished fifth in 56.77.<\/p>\n Dillon Stangeland<\/strong> (57.81), Glenview Titan’s\u00a0Quinn<\/strong> Loughran<\/strong> (57.82), and Brenner (58.02) completed the competitive heat.<\/p>\n Barrington Swim Club’s team of Emary, Catherine Kitzman<\/strong>, Pritchett, and O’Leary dominated the women’s 400 medley relay, putting together a time of 4:23.17 for first place.<\/p>\n Second place went to Phoenix Swimming’s Breiter, Walker, Clements, and Grace Walker<\/strong> and their combined time of 4:27.70.<\/p>\n AquaStorm put together a third-place team of Briana Rittenbach<\/strong>, Herrmann, Carly Palmer<\/strong>, and Alexis Duchsherer<\/strong>, who touched in 4:34.16.<\/p>\n Cats Aquatic Team (4:34.49), Sioux Falls Swim Team (4:35.11), High Tides (4:37.27), Piranhas Swim Club (4:37.97), and Aberdeen Swim Club (4:38.01) also placed in the top eight of relay teams.<\/p>\n Wilton, Jason McMechan<\/strong>, Tylen Phillips<\/strong>, and Hyunsoo Jang<\/strong> won the men’s event for the Colorado Stars with their time of 4:01.83, dropping over two seconds from their seed time.<\/p>\n Phoenix Swimming men Jack Carignan<\/strong>, Reich, Tony Min<\/strong>, and Dylan Walsh<\/strong> were close behind for the silver in 4:02.73.<\/p>\n Third place went to Glenview Titan Aquatic Club’s team of Jacob Shapiro<\/strong>, Iida, Loughran, and Sami Moussally<\/strong> in 4:02.97, almost unseating first seed Phoenix even further.<\/p>\n Cats placed fourth in 4:03.09, followed by Bloomington Normal Swim Club in 4:04.47 for fifth.<\/p>\n Piranhas Swim Club (4:08.27), Glenview Titan Aquatic Club’s B-team (4:10.44), and Colorado Stars B-team (4:14.43) also placed in the top eight of relay teams for the evening.<\/p>\n The final day of competition will kick off with prelims at 10am CST and finals of the 1500, 200m backstroke, 50m free, 200m fly, and 400m free relay will start at 5pm CST.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Midwest teams continued to showcase their depth at the Pleasant Prairie stop of the 2018 Spring Speedo Sectionals series, competing in four events on the third night of finals.
