Heading into the 2016 Olympic Games as the favorite for gold in the sprint free events, she faltered in the finals and left without an individual medal in either event. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-olympic-letdown-cate-campbell-finds-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After taking 2017 to re-discover her passion for the sport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Campbell didn\u2019t miss a beat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-and-kyle-chalmers-back-in-full-swing-for-2018-australian-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">getting back into the swing of competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and fast swimming).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just off her Australian and Commonwealth record earlier in the meet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2018-australian-trials-day-two-finals-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 100 free (52.37)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fresh off a new Australian record in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-sprints-to-new-australian-record-in-50-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 fly (25.47)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 25-year old saved her best swim for last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-breaks-australian-commonwealth-record-in-50-free\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when she blasted a 23.79 in the 50 free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to win the finals of the event. That took .05 off of her old record and brought her within .12 of the world record in the event, now held by Sweden\u2019s <\/span><b>Sarah Sjostrom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
