COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 3. IT was a mixed bag of results for the University of Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams Saturday afternoon vs. Ohio State and Virginia Tech in Columbus. <\/p>\n
The Terrapin women improved to 6-1 on the year with wins over the host Buckeyes 150-92 and the Hokies, 136-107. The Terrapin men did not fare as well, losing to both Ohio State 143-96 and Virginia Tech 136-105. <\/p>\n
Women's Meets<\/b>
\nJunior Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) had an outstanding meet, winning three events for the Terps. Mallon finished first in the 200-fly (2:04.91) while also swimming on the winning 400-free and 400-medley relay teams. <\/p>\n
As a team, the Terrapin women had three other swimmers that won two events on the day. Senior Petra Adamkova (Nachod, Czech Rep.) won the 50-free (23.99) and junior Jill Martin finished first in the 200-breast (2:21.64) as the two also swam on the Terps' winning 400-medley relay team (3:52.98). <\/p>\n
Freshman Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) joined the other three on the winning relay squad. Freshman Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) captured first-place honors in both the 200-IM (2:04.20) and the 500-free (4:59.71). <\/p>\n
The 400-free relay team consisting of freshman Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.); senior Kelly Bowman (Hauppauge, N.Y.); sophomore Valerie Courtois (Saveuse, France) and Bridget Mallon also turned in a winning performance in a time of 3:32.01. <\/p>\n
Men's Meets<\/b>
\nOn the men's side, both freshman Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) and senior Michael Malchak (Columbia, Md.) won events. Weinberg was first in the 200-back (1:50.51) while Malchak won the 500-free (4:41.60).<\/p>\n
The 400-free relay team that included Weinberg, freshman Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.); junior Gordon Hazzard (Darnestown, Md.) and freshman Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) won with a time of 3:11.47. <\/p>\n
The loss dropped the Terrapin men 3-4 on the year while the Terrapin women improved to 6-1. Both squads are in action next Friday (Nov. 9) at home vs. Georgia Tech. The action will begin at 4 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
