During the Friday morning prelims session at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Atlanta,\u00a0Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>each laid down quick efforts in the splash-and-dash as part of an eight-event morning. Read below for detailed event-by-event coverage of the session.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mission Viejo’s\u00a0Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>laid down by far the top time of the morning with a 25.02. That was more than four tenths better than Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>, who took second in 25.46, and Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford<\/strong>, who was third in 25.48.<\/p>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Farida Osman<\/strong> took fourth in 25.49, ahead of\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>(25.56) and then a tie between Trojan’s\u00a0Anika Apostalon<\/strong> and\u00a0HPC Ontario’s\u00a0Kayla Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>at 25.58. Mission Viejo’s\u00a0Isabella Arcila\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth in 25.61, and her teammate\u00a0Amanda Kendall\u00a0<\/strong>(ninth, 25.72) should also advance to the final with Comerford expected to scratch.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n
In the final heat of prelims, 18-year-old\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>blasted a 22.16 to lead the field into the final by three tenths of a second. Second behind Andrew was Cal’s\u00a0Nathan Adrian<\/strong>, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the event, and third was 2017 World Championships silver medalist\u00a0Bruno Fratus<\/strong>. Adrian put up a time of 22.46, and Fratus, representing Coral Springs, clocked 22.50.<\/p>\n
Fratus’ fellow Brazilian\u00a0Marcelo<\/strong> Cherighini<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>of Tiger Elite Racing, was fourth in 22.60, followed by Arilson Silva’s\u00a0Andrii Govorov\u00a0<\/strong>(22.65), Argentina’s\u00a0Guido Buscaglia\u00a0<\/strong>(22.69), Trojan’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(22.74) and Club Aquatique’s\u00a0Mehdi Ayoubi<\/strong> (22.99).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top prelims time in the 200 back, coming in at 2:12.79. The world record-holder in the 200 free is not swimming her signature event in Atlanta but has begun racing more and more backstroke late in her career.<\/p>\n
A pair of Canadians qualified second and third, with HPC-Ontario’s\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.02) and HPC-Victoria’s\u00a0Jade Hannah\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.63). SwimMAC’s\u00a0Sinclair Larson\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 2:14.02, making her the top American in the morning.<\/p>\n
Argentina’s\u00a0Andrea Berrino<\/strong> took fifth in 2:16.17, followed by 14-year-old\u00a0Mariah Denigan<\/strong> of the Northern Kentucky Clippers (2:16.82). Pointe-Claire’s\u00a0Aela Janiver\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.03) took seventh,and there was a tie for eighth, with Sandpipers’\u00a0Erica Sullivan\u00a0<\/strong>and Italy’s\u00a0Carlotta Zofkova<\/strong>\u00a0both touching in 2:17.44 to set up a potential swim-off.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team Elite’s Ryosuke Irie<\/strong>, who won a silver medal in the 200 back at the 2012 Olympics, edged out Cal’s\u00a0Jacob Pebley<\/strong> for the top seed in prelims of the 200 back, 2:00.13 to 2:00.51. Pebley’s teammate\u00a0Ryan Murph<\/strong>y<\/strong>, the Olympic silver medalist in the event, was third in a comfortable 2:01.76.<\/p>\n
UBC Thunderbirds teammates\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.35)\u00a0and\u00a0Josiah Binnema\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.84) took fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Plymouth Whitemarsh’s\u00a0Andrew Abruzzo\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.90), SwimAtlanta’s\u00a0Bradley Dunham\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.05) and Dynamo’s\u00a0Ian Grum\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.59).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n
China’s\u00a0Wang Jianjiahe<\/strong>, fresh off a sub-8:20 performance in the 800 free Thursday night, posted the top seed in the 200 free prelims, pulling ahead of HPC-Ontario’s\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>on the final 50 in their heat. Wang finished in 1:57.80, well ahead of Ruck (1:59.35) and Smith (1:59.45).<\/p>\n
St. Petersburg’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis<\/strong> also broke 2:00, qualifying fourth in 1:59.85, followed by Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.77) and\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.54).<\/p>\n
Two more Canadians, Toronto Swim Club’s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.74) and HPC-Ontario’s\u00a0Kayla Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.06), also got into the top eight, and a fifth Canadian,\u00a0Erika Seltenrich<\/strong>, will also get into the championship final after Comerford scratches. Seltenrich posted a time of 2:02.15 in prelims.<\/p>\n

Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>will go for his second win of the meet as the top seed in the 200 free final. He posted a 1:49.03 in prelims to finish just ahead of a tight pack that included another of his Texas and U.S. Olympic teammates,\u00a0Clark Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Mission Viejo’s\u00a0Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 1:49.29,\u00a0Marwan Elkamash\u00a0<\/strong>was third (1:49.31), Baylor’s\u00a0Trey Freeman\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth (1:49.47) and Smith was fifth (1:49.48).<\/p>\n

Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>made her return to the 400 IM after a hiatus of several years, out-dueling Longhorn’s\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>in their prelims heat to take the top seed for finals. Flickinger posted a time of 4:43.28, ahead of\u00a0Cox (4:44.98) and St. Petersburg’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis<\/strong> (4:47.58).<\/p>\n
14-year-old\u00a0Mariah Denigan\u00a0<\/strong>made her second final of the day for the Northern Kentucky Clippers, finishing fourth in 4:48.17. Other finalists included Sarasota YMCA’s\u00a0Emma Weyant\u00a0<\/strong>(4:50.46), Trojan’s\u00a0Haley Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:51.67), UBC Thunderbirds’\u00a0Megan Dalke<\/strong> (4:52.70) and Magnolia’s\u00a0Kaitylnn Sims\u00a0<\/strong>(4:53.80).<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/h3>\n
After finishing second in the 800 free Thursday night, Plymouth Whitemarsh’s\u00a0Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong> led the way in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.37. He finished ahead of three men who have all won NCAA titles in the event and one of whom is the reigning World Champion.<\/p>\n
Longhorn’s\u00a0Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second behind Abruzzo in 4:24.36, followed by Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> in 4:25.35. Cal’s\u00a0Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 4:26.11.<\/p>\n
The final will also include UBC Thunderbirds’\u00a0Colin Eriks\u00a0<\/strong>(4:27.53), SwimAtlanta’s\u00a0Andrew Winton<\/strong> (4:29.20), Argentina’s\u00a0Santiago Bergliaffa\u00a0<\/strong>(4:29.75) and Dynamo’s\u00a0Ian Grum\u00a0<\/strong>(4:30.44).<\/p>\n
