Grothe had a serious challenge though from World Junior champion\u00a0<strong>Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong>. Grothe held off the 18-year-old with a 7:53.88 to Abruzzo&#8217;s 7:54.51. Abruzzo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-juniors-gold-medalist-andrew-abruzzo-verbally-commits-to-georgia-bulldogs\/\" target=\"_blank\">will be headed to Georgia next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They could not catch the pool record of 7:50.28 from 1995 Pan Pacs set by Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Kowalski<\/strong>.
