AUSTIN, Texas, March 2. THOUGH nearly every non-collegiate meet in the United States is sticking with the long course format in this Olympic year, the American Short Course Championships stood by its name with impressive swims on its opening day.<\/p>\n
Olympian Garrett Weber-Gale provided the highlight of first day with a 19.20 to win the 50 freestyle. Weber-Gale's time is the second-fastest in the event in short course yards this year, behind Ohio State's Jason Schnur. A pair of ties also took place. Kerrington Hill and Charlie Moore, both sophomores at the University of Texas, tied for second with 19.95, while Texas sophomore Madison Wenzler and Stanford sophomore tied for fourth with a 19.98.<\/p>\n
Boulder City-Henderson Swim Team's Sammy Harrison won the women's 500 freestyle with a 4:48.94, with Michelle Berry of Santa Clara touching second with a 4:56.70. Thrd place went to Isabel Shipman of Badger with a 4:57.77.<\/p>\n
Jake Ritter, a freshman from Texas, held off Missouri freshman Eegan Groome to win the men's 500 freestyle with a 4:18.33 to Groome's 4:18.47. Burke Sims, swimming unattached, placed third with a 4:24.83.<\/p>\n
Chloe Isleta, a 13-year-old representing Santa Clara, won the women's 200 IM with a 2:02.75, using a strong freestyle leg to overtake Brea Aquatics' Ashley Tse, who placed second with a 2:02.82. Mallory Harris of Boulder City-Henderson was third with a 2:03.38.<\/p>\n
Texas junior Conor Swanson won the men's 200 IM with a 1:46.11 in a close race with Stanford sophomore Will Gunderson, who touched second in 1:46.70. Brendan Hansen, the two-time Olympian, placed third with a 1:47.33.<\/p>\n
Trinity Prep won the women's 200 freestyle relay with a 1:35.49 over Boulder City-Henderson's 1:36.09. In third place was Riptyde with a 1:36.55.<\/p>\n
Texas All-Americans Jimmy Feigen and Dax Hill stepped up with Charlie Moore and Tripp Cooper to win the men's 200 freestyle relay with a 1:17.55. Feigen led off the relay with a 19.40, while Hill was the anchor leg with a 19.07 as Moore split 19.33 and Cooper swam a 19.75. Second place went to Southern Methodist University with a 1:18.77, while Stanford placed third with a 1:19.96.<\/p>\n
Santa Clara won the women's 400 medley relay with a 3:52.82, just ahead of Riptyde's 3:53.29. Trinity Prep finished third in 3:54.51.<\/p>\n
The Stanford men closed out day one with the win in the 400 medley relay with a 3:13.47. Second place went to Boulder City-Henderson, who swam a 3:27.28, while third place went to Bend with a 3:32.29. Southern Methodist and Missouri were in the race for the win, but were disqualified.<\/p>\n
