CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, February 27. JOHN Macionis, an Olympic silver medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics as part of Team USA's 800 freestyle relay, died at the age of 95 on Feb. 16. <\/p>\n
Macionis was a national AAU and NCAA champion, as well as captain of the Yale University squad prior to becoming the first man from his school to compete at the Olympics in 1936. He later served in the Coast Guard during World War II, missing out on competing at the 1940 Tokyo Olympics. <\/p>\n
Macionis later went on to help found the Philadelphia Swim Directors Society, and the Junior Swim League, which helped organize age group swimming throughout the country. He also continued to officiate until 2009, and competed in Masters swimming competitions until the age of 94, including setting five Masters world records during his Masters career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
