During the final morning of the men’s ACC championships in Greensboro, N.C., NC State junior\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>and Louisville freshman\u00a0Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>each threw down quick efforts to set themselves up as No. 1 seeds for finals. Meanwhile, Ress and his Wolfpack teammates continued their march towards a fourth straight conference crown.<\/p>\n

First up, Notre Dame’s\u00a0Rob Whitacre\u00a0<\/strong>recorded a time of 1:40.17 for the top seed in the men’s 200 back. Finishing in second was NC State’s\u00a0Coleman Stewart<\/strong>, fresh off a blistering 44.54 in the 100 back Friday evening, and\u00a0Hennessy Stuart\u00a0<\/strong>finished third for the Wolfpack in 1:40.91.<\/p>\n

Virginia’s\u00a0Robby Giller\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 1:41.37, with teammate\u00a0Brendan Casey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.86) and Georgia Tech’s\u00a0Colton Williamson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.89) just behind. Notre Dame’s\u00a0Jack Montesi<\/strong> (1:42.06) and Louisville’s\u00a0Nikkos\u00a0Sofianidis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.24) also qualified in the top eight.<\/p>\n

Ress qualified first in the men’s 100 free with his time of 41.74. The winner of the 200 free Friday night, Ress led a trio of NC State swimmers in the top three spots as he was followed by\u00a0Jacob Molacek\u00a0<\/strong>(42.01) and\u00a0Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(42.10). Held will be going for his third win of the meet after already capturing the 50 free and 100 fly.<\/p>\n
There was a gap back to the rest of the top eight qualifiers, with Florida State’s\u00a0Will Pisani\u00a0<\/strong>leading the way in 42.73, ahead of Louisville’s\u00a0Andrej Barna\u00a0<\/strong>(42.77), NC State’s\u00a0Giovanni Izzo\u00a0<\/strong>(42.86), Notre Dame’s\u00a0Daniel Speers\u00a0<\/strong>(42.88) and Florida State’s\u00a0Emir Muratovic\u00a0<\/strong>(43.08).<\/p>\n

Georgia Tech should be poised for a strong showing in the 200 breast after\u00a0Moises Loschi\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first in 1:54.23, and he will be joined in the final by teammate\u00a0Caio Pumputis<\/strong>, who qualified eighth in 1:55.68.<\/p>\n
Virginia’s\u00a0Matthew Otto<\/strong> qualified second, just behind Loschi in 1:54.57, and Louisville teammates\u00a0Carlos Claverie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.57 and\u00a0Evgenii Somov\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.59) took third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n
The final will also include UNC’s\u00a0Michael McBryan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.98), Virginia’s\u00a0Keefer Barnum<\/strong> (1:55.08) and Duke’s\u00a0Judd Howard\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.31).<\/p>\n

Finally, Albiero rounded out the morning with a top-seeded effort of 1:41.61 in the 200 fly prelims. He will have plenty of challenges in the final, though, as\u00a0NC State’s\u00a0Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 1:41.69 and Virginia’s\u00a0Ted Schubert\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:42.00.<\/p>\n
Schubert was disqualified in the 400 IM prelims Friday but ended up time trialing and swimming a time of 3:39.52, much faster than\u00a0Anton Ipsen’s\u00a0<\/strong>ACC title-winning time of 3:40.48.<\/p>\n
Louisville’s\u00a0Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.22) and NC State’s\u00a0James Bretscher\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.61) qualified fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Virginia’s\u00a0Zach Fong\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.64), Georgia Tech’s\u00a0Christian Ferraro\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.03) and Notre Dame’s\u00a0Aaron Schultz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.00).<\/p>\n
