The 2018 Indiana Boys High School State Championships splashed into fierce action today with two National High School (HS) records falling in the preliminary session.<\/p>\n
Carmel got off to a fiery start with a new National High School record in the 200 medley relay. Teammates\u00a0Wyatt Davis<\/strong> (22.39),\u00a0Stefano Batista<\/strong> (24.83),\u00a0Drew Kibler<\/strong> (20.64), and\u00a0Andrew Couchon<\/strong> (20.14) delivered a top qualifying time of 1:28.00 to down the Indiana State record of 1:29.44, as well as the National HS Public Record of 1:29.20.<\/p>\n The National HS record was originally set by Minnetonka in 2017, while the Indiana state record was posted by Zionsville, also in 2017.<\/p>\n Carroll (Fort Wayne) posted the second fastest time of the night at a 1:31.13, while Zionsville took third in prelims with a 1:31.34.<\/p>\n Jacob Destrampe<\/strong> of Franklin Community snagged the top seed in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:37.78, while the Carmel boys were hot on his heels.\u00a0Jacob Mitchell<\/strong> (1:38.42),\u00a0Augustus Rothro<\/strong> (1:40.11), and\u00a0Alec DeLong<\/strong> (1:40.89) return as second through fourth place seeds for Carmel.<\/p>\n Tristan DeWitt<\/strong> of Carroll (Fort Wayne) delivered the top time in the 200 IM, posting a 1:48.47 for his top seed. Bloomington South’s\u00a0Paul Gabhart<\/strong> grabbed second with a 1:49.51, followed by Carmel’s\u00a0Wyatt Davis’<\/strong> 1:49.88.<\/p>\n Drew Kibler<\/strong> of Carmel unleashed a 19.38 in the individual 50 free, easily downing\u00a0Jack Franzman’s<\/strong> 2017 state record of 19.85. Kibler’s time also sits in questions as to whether it is a new national high school public record or not. According to the NFHS database, his time would count as the new record, however, many news outlets regard Dressel’s 2013 19.29 as the national record.<\/p>\n Franzman qualified second overall in prelims with a 20.03, while Valparaiso’s\u00a0Ryan Hrosik<\/strong> took third with a 20.45.<\/p>\n Following his sprint endeavors, Kibler quickly turned his focus to the 100 fly, posting a time of 46.81 to grab another top seed. His time sits a shy .50 seconds off the state record of 46.31, set by\u00a0Aaron Whitaker<\/strong> in 2014. Greenfield Central’s\u00a0Zachary Cook<\/strong> flew to second overall with a 48.90, just ahead of Indian Creek’s\u00a0Tucker Brock<\/strong> and his time of 49.56.<\/p>\n Franzman held off a charging Destrampe in prelims of the 100 free, posting a 44.22 over Destrampe’s 44.29. The two return as the top seeds for tomorrow’s final, while Highland’s\u00a0Ethan Churilla<\/strong> will return as third with a 45.21.<\/p>\n Mitchell of Carmel outlasted the competition in prelims of the 500 free, grabbing the top seed with a time of 4:27.14. Joining him in the middle of the pool tomorrow will be Bloomington South’s\u00a0Gabhart (4:29.36) and Carmel’s Rothro (4:31.54).<\/p>\n Franklin Community claimed the top seed in the 200 free relay with a combined time of 1:22.92. Zionsville picked up second with a 1:23.48, followed by Carmel’s 1:24.58.<\/p>\n Noah Yarian<\/strong> of Carroll (Fort Wayne) picked up the top seed in the 100 back, holding off the competition for a time of 48.35. Finishing hot on his heels was Carmel’s Davis with a time of 48.55, just ahead of teammate\u00a0Drew Amaral’s<\/strong> 49.62.<\/p>\n The 100 breast belonged to Carmel’s Batista in prelims as the senior charged to a top seed time of 54.28. Teammate\u00a0Andrew Couchon<\/strong> picked up second overall with a 54.43, while third was earned by Munster’s\u00a0Kyle Adams’<\/strong> 54.71.<\/p>\n The final relay of the night was owned by Franklin Community with a time of 3:03.46.
