The first night of Men’s Big Ten’s provided some very fast racing as Indiana broke a legendary pool record in the 800 free relay to sweep the two relays on opening night. Indiana got off to a good start in the meet as they are looking to defend their Big Ten title they won a year ago, while Ohio State and Michigan will look to break the tie they had last year for second.<\/p>\n

The Indiana Hoosiers got their Big Ten meet started with a 200 medley relay victory at 1:23.95 to just hold off Minnesota (1:24.25) and Ohio State (1:24.52). The Hoosiers had\u00a0Gabriel Fantoni\u00a0<\/strong>(20.95),\u00a0Ian Finnerty\u00a0<\/strong>(23.50),\u00a0Vini Lanza\u00a0<\/strong>(19.98) and\u00a0Ali Khalafalla\u00a0<\/strong>(19.52) swimming on their relay.<\/p>\n
Khalafalla had a slow split but it appeared he had a bad start and breakout as he dove in well ahead of Ohio State in the lane next to them. Minnesota was second thanks to a stellar freestyle leg by\u00a0Bowen Becker\u00a0<\/strong>(18.24). He and Michigan’s\u00a0James Peek\u00a0<\/strong>(18.94) were the only swimmers anchoring under 19 seconds.<\/p>\n
Minnesota’s\u00a0Conner McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>had the fastest breaststroke split with a 23.40 while Lanza had the fastest fly leg.<\/p>\n
This is Indiana’s second straight Big Ten title in the 200 medley relay and their sixth overall title in the event.<\/p>\n
Michigan (1:24.79), Iowa (1:25.77), Penn State (1:26.16), Purdue (1:26.19) and Wisconsin (1:26.40) also placed in the top eight.<\/p>\n
