BUFFALO, New York, February 22. THE University of Massachusetts men, and the Fordham and Richmond women currently sit atop the leader board after the first day of competition at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.<\/p>\n
The minutemen lead with a total of 117 points after recording a first-place finish in the 800-yd Freestyle Relay (6:35.11) and a second-place finish in the 200-yd Medley Relay (1:30.52).<\/p>\n
The Massachusetts’ time of 6:35.11 in the 800-yd Freestyle set a new Atlantic 10 Conference Championship record, breaking the previous record set in 2011.<\/p>\n
Following Massachusetts in the standings is St. Bonaventure (106 points), Saint Louis (88 points), La Salle (88 points), Fordham (64 points), Xavier (58 points) and George Washington (56 points).<\/p>\n
Fordham and Richmond are tied for the lead on the women’s side with 74 points each. They are followed by La Salle (60 points), Rhode Island (56 points), St. Bonaventure (52 points), Xavier (46 points), Massachusetts (46 points), Duquesne (46 points), George Washington (42 points) and Saint Louis (40 points).<\/p>\n
Richmond started off the championship setting a new Atlantic 10 Conference record in the 200-yd Medley Relay (1:39.48) en route to recording a first-place finish while finishing just ahead of second-place finisher Fordham.<\/p>\n
Fordham rebounded strongly in the 800-yd Freestyle with a time of 7:21.56, and first-place finish in the event. The Spiders finished second in the event.<\/p>\n
The Championships continue Thursday morning with trials beginning at 10:30 am and the finals taking place at 6:30 pm.<\/p>\n
