SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 22. THE 2012 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship began today with San Jose State setting a new WAC record in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:39.38.<\/p>\n
The Spartans' team of Heather Denman, Kirsten Trammel, Ashlyn Acosta and Meghan McCurley broke the WAC record, WAC meet record and Palo Alto Natatorium record with an NCAA consideration time. The previous WAC record was 1:39.88 set by SMU in 1999. New Mexico State took second with a time of 1:41.48 while Northern Arizona, Hawaii and Idaho all earned provisional times as well.<\/p>\n
In the only other race of the day, Northern Arizona took the gold medal with a win in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Emma Lowther, Rachel Palmer, Chalene Dirks-Ryan and Krista Maier won with an NCAA consideration time of 7:18.76. San Jose State, Hawaii and New Mexico State also recorded NCAA provisional times.<\/p>\n
After one day of competition, San Jose State is the leader with 74 points. Northern Arizona is in second with 72 points followed by New Mexico State in third with 64, Hawaii with 62, Idaho 56, Fresno State 50, Nevada 46 and North Dakota 26.<\/p>\n
Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
