37 Thoughts Swim Fans Have from the Stands (Archive)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This past weekend I did something I have never done before: I watched my first swim meet.<\/p>\n

Technically, I have watched hundreds of swim meets before, but always from the deck as either a swimmer racing or as a coach.\u00a0Last weekend, however, I got to actually watch. <\/em><\/p>\n

As a newly-retired swimmer, I drove down to see my former teammates compete at their conference championship meet. Decked out in my school colors as always, I got to experience swimming and diving from a new perspective– as a fan in the stands.<\/p>\n

Here are 37 thoughts fans have when watching swimming and diving:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. I need to make sure I get there at least<\/em> thirty minutes early.<\/li>\n
  2. I actually have to pay to watch people swim back and forth?<\/li>\n
  3. Must. Find. Best. Seat.<\/li>\n
  4. Good thing I didn\u2019t leave my highlighters at home so I can mark up the heat sheet.<\/li>\n
  5. Wow, <\/em>their warmup is taking FOREVER. When will this meet finally begin?<\/li>\n
  6. I wonder which is more boring: watching <\/em>warmup or swimming<\/em> warmup?<\/li>\n
  7. Okay, here we go. First event.<\/li>\n
  8. First event is over, only a few more to go.<\/li>\n
  9. *two hours later*<\/li>\n
  10. Alright, now<\/em> we only have a few events left!<\/li>\n
  11. I wonder what their coach is saying to them.<\/li>\n
  12. Can that swimmer move? I\u2019m trying to read the coach\u2019s lips.<\/li>\n
  13. Why is that kid crying? Their swim wasn\u2019t that\u00a0<\/em>bad.<\/li>\n
  14. My team just out-touched that other team. HA.<\/li>\n
  15. I\u2019m not even swimming but the smell of chlorine will be on me for days.<\/li>\n
  16. Only a 6? But that dive looked like a perfect 10 from here!<\/li>\n
  17. How is diving even scored?<\/li>\n
  18. That<\/em> dive was for sure a 10.<\/li>\n
  19. Why is Meet Mobile not refreshing?<\/li>\n
  20. The announcer keeps mispronouncing names, I should do his job.<\/li>\n
  21. Is it as hot up here as it is on deck?<\/li>\n
  22. Alright, Meet Mobile is officially broken.<\/li>\n
  23. I\u2019d much rather be sitting up here than swimming the mile\u2026<\/li>\n
  24. Only lap 31? We\u2019re not even halfway done?<\/li>\n
  25. Jeez, <\/em>this pool looks so long from this angle.<\/li>\n
  26. If I cheer loud enough, they will definitely hear me.<\/li>\n
  27. Meet Mobile is back up! Thank goodness for this app.<\/li>\n
  28. Oh boy, that swimmer in lane five is struggling\u2026<\/li>\n
  29. KICK! USE YOUR LEGS!<\/li>\n
  30. Oh my gosh, I can\u2019t watch this anymore.<\/li>\n
  31. GO FASTER, THEY\u2019RE CATCHING UP TO YOU!<\/li>\n
  32. WHY CAN\u2019T THEY HEAR ME?<\/li>\n
  33. Alright, I have to sit back down. The people behind me are mad that they can\u2019t see.<\/li>\n
  34. Oh my gosh, I\u2019m so nervous.<\/li>\n
  35. If I\u2019m<\/em> this nervous, I can\u2019t even imagine how they must be feeling.<\/li>\n
  36. MY TEAM IS BETTER THAN YOUR TEAM.<\/li>\n
  37. Wow, I am so proud of my team.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

She graduated from the University of Vermont in 2019 with a degree in Public Communication and a double minor in Coaching and Sports Management.
