LONDON, England, February 22. CHRIS Colwill (Brandon, Fla.\/Athens, Ga.) finished ninth in the men's 3-meter preliminaries Tuesday at the FINA Diving World Cup to advance to Wednesday's semifinals and qualify the United States a second Olympic spot on that event.<\/p>\n
Colwill, a 2008 Olympian, scored 444.95 points in a long contest that featured 59 divers and took four hours to complete. He was consistent throughout the day, scoring more than 70 points on all six dives. His best dives came in rounds three and four when he scored 79.90 points on both of his twisting dives. <\/p>\n
"I knew it was going to be a long day. It was a little tough waiting 45 minutes or so between dives, but I did my best to keep my mind off things," Colwill said. "I stayed above 70 points on all my dives, and I'm happy with how I did."<\/p>\n
Colwill's performance means the U.S. will have maximum representation in the individual events at the 2012 Olympic Games. Each country can qualify up to two spots in each individual event, and the U.S. has now solidified all eight spots. The U.S. is also qualified in the men"s synchronized 3-meter event and will look to qualify in the other three synchro events later this week. The Olympic team will be selected in June.<\/p>\n
Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.\/Stanford, Calif.) also competed in the men"s 3-meter preliminaries but did not advance, finishing 24th with 402.30 points. China"s Qin Kai led the field with 521.85 points.<\/p>\n
In other action Tuesday, Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.) finished 17th in the women"s platform semifinals and did not advance to the finals. Ishimatsu scored 287.30 points, with her best dive coming in the last round when she scored 70.40 points on her back 2 with 1 twists. China"s Chen Ruolin ended up winning the gold in the evening finals. <\/p>\n
The World Cup continues through February 26. Wednesday's competition features men's 3-meter semifinals and finals as well as women's synchronized 10-meter preliminaries and finals.<\/p>\n
