ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, February 19. SEVERAL state records fell during the New Mexico High School State Championships Feb. 17-18 in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n
Albuquerque Academy junior Anika Apostalon took down standards in both the girls 100 yard free (50.66) and the 100 back (54.24). <\/p>\n
Two boys set one state record and notched a second win. St. Pius senior Jack Feely lowered the 200 free standard to 1:40.84 and captured the 500 free in 4:34.36. Valley sophomore Dorian Heller took the 100 breast in a record-setting 57.19 and topped the field in the 200 IM with his 1:54.35.<\/p>\n
Four girls set a single state mark each: Albuquerque senior Madison Bridges (200 IM, 2:00.44) and freshman Cassaundra Pino (100 fly, 56.62), La Cueva sophomore Nika Fellows (200 free, 1:51.10) and Las Cruces senior Samantha Harding (500 free, 4:51.47).<\/p>\n
La Cueva junior Kristopher Tillery doubled in the boys 100 free (47.63) and 100 back (51.12). Taking home one trophy each were St. Pius VI seniors Natasha Moffitt (girls 100 breast, 1:06.04) and John Stoer (50 free, 22.14); and Albuquerque Academy's Anthony Kim (boys 100 fly, 52.20) and Gillian St. John (girls 50 free, 23.32).
\nThis year's diving champions were Cleveland junior Levi Smith (448.10) and Manzanita senior Courtney Brooks (464.95).<\/p>\n
\tOnly one of the six relays were able to better a state record. The Albuquerque Academy team of Apostalon, junior Eileen Kawamoto, senior Lexi Davis and St. John combined for a 1:46.70 in the girls 200 medley relay. They also took first in the 200 free relay (1:38.82). Las Cruces' 400 free relay quartet of junior Josi Gabaldon and seniors Moranda Madero, Lauren Salas and Harding posted a 3:35.41.<\/p>\n
\tEldorado swept the boys relay races. Seniors Henry Homans, Ian Walker, Greg Rempe and Karl Johannes put up a 1:39.16 in the 200 medley; juniors Jonah Hanks and Tomas Babuska joined Johannes and Rempe for a 1:29.45 in the 200 free; and Walker, Hanks, Babuska and Homans cruised to a 3:14.87 in the 400 free.<\/p>\n
\tAlbuquerque Academy nabbed the girls team championship title with 339 points. Las Cruces was second (267), followed by La Cueva (230), Eldorado (214) and Albuquerque (170). In the boys team race, Eldorado came out on top with 340 points with Albuquerque Academy second (241), La Cueva third (197), Hobbs fourth (165) and Rio Rancho fifth (145).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
