The final night of the Women’s Big Ten Conference Championships\u00a0featured five new meet records as\u00a0Ally McHugh<\/strong>,\u00a0Beata Nelson<\/strong>,\u00a0Liz Li<\/strong>,\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong> and\u00a0Vanessa Krause\u00a0<\/strong>won individual titles in the pool on Saturday night in Columbus. Nelson won swimmer of the meet while Ohio State’s\u00a0Kristen Romano\u00a0<\/strong>won freshman of the year.<\/p>\n

Penn State’s\u00a0Ally McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>posted one of the best times in the nation we have seen with a 15:43.34 to break the meet record held by Michigan’s\u00a0G Ryan<\/strong> (15:44.93). This is Penn State’s first Big Ten victory in the 1650 since 1994 when\u00a0Regan Stacey\u00a0<\/strong>won the title for the Nittany Lions. It is also Penn State’s first Big Ten title since 2014.<\/p>\n
She led a very fast field as Michigan’s\u00a0Rose Bi\u00a0<\/strong>finished in second at 15:51.18 and Ohio State’s\u00a0Molly Kowal\u00a0<\/strong>had a monster back half to finish in third at 15:53.11.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0Sierra Schmidt\u00a0<\/strong>(15:54.39), Indiana’s\u00a0Cassy Jernberg\u00a0<\/strong>(15:54.41), Michigan’s\u00a0G Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>(15:59.72), Purdue’s\u00a0Kaersten Meitz\u00a0<\/strong>(16:02.02) and Rutgers’\u00a0Sveva Schiazzano\u00a0<\/strong>(16:11.92) swam in perhaps the fastest field in Big Ten history.<\/p>\n

200 Back<\/h3>\n
Wisconsin sophomore\u00a0Beata Nelson\u00a0<\/strong>won her second event of the weekend with a 1:49.59 to break the Big Ten meet record that was her own at 1:50.46. Nelson set that record this morning in prelims and went almost a full second faster. Michigan senior\u00a0Clara Smiddy\u00a0<\/strong>came in second place at 1:50.63 and Indiana’s\u00a0Kennedy Goss\u00a0<\/strong>was third at 1:51.66.<\/p>\n
Smiddy was the 2016 champion and Goss was the 2017 champion, and Nelson beat both of them for the crown in 2018. Nelson is Wisconsin’s first Big Ten champion in the 200 back since\u00a0Maggie Meyer\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2011. The Badgers also had two other swimmers in the field with\u00a0Kathleen Coughlin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.03) getting fifth and\u00a0Jess Unicomb\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.73) getting sixth.<\/p>\n
Ohio State’s\u00a0Kristen Romano\u00a0<\/strong>(1:53.34), Minnesota’s\u00a0Tevyn Waddell\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.84) and Michigan’s\u00a0Jacqueline Schafer\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.03) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n
Indiana is now currently in second place with 887 points ahead of Minnesota (834) and Ohio State (817).<\/p>\n

100 Free<\/h3>\n
In one of the most hyped races of the meet, Ohio State’s\u00a0Liz Li\u00a0<\/strong>won her third event of the meet with a 47.43 in the 100 free final. Li held off Michigan’s\u00a0Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>at 47.54. Li won the 50 and Haughey won the 200 so the two clashed in between in the 100 on Saturday night but it was Li who won the final in her home pool for a new Big Ten meet record. Michigan’s\u00a0Gabby DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(48.01) finished in third place.<\/p>\n
Li successfully defends her title from last year.<\/p>\n
Michigan got major points with four total finalists.\u00a0Catie DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(48.30) and\u00a0Daria Pyshnenko\u00a0<\/strong>(48.70) finished in fourth and sixth for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n
Zoe Avestruz\u00a0<\/strong>(48.61),\u00a0Macie McNichols\u00a0<\/strong>(48.89) and\u00a0Marissa Berg\u00a0<\/strong>(48.95) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

200 Breast<\/h3>\n
Indiana junior\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>won her third straight Big Ten title in the 200 breast and remains perfect at the Big Ten Championships as she won the 200 with a 2:04.68. King back halfed the final with 31.9’s on her last two 50’s as she got some serious pressure from former teammate\u00a0Miranda Tucker\u00a0<\/strong>of Michigan. Tucker was second with a 2:06.59 and Minnesota sophomore\u00a0Lindsey Kozelsky\u00a0<\/strong>was third at 2:07.37.<\/p>\n
King is now the third swimmer to win at least three titles in the 200 breast joining Minnesota’s\u00a0Haley Spencer\u00a0<\/strong>(10, 12, 13), Michigan’s\u00a0Ann Colloton\u00a0<\/strong>(1988-1990) and Michigan’s\u00a0Christi Vedejs\u00a0<\/strong>(1985-1987).<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0Emily Kopas\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.37), Minnesota’s\u00a0Rachel Munson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.49), Ohio State’s\u00a0Hanna Gresser\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.78), Northwestern’s\u00a0Sophie Angus\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.81) and Indiana’s\u00a0Laura Morley\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.55) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Michigan’s\u00a0Vanessa Krause\u00a0<\/strong>continued the record smashing on Saturday night at the Big Ten Championships in Ohio State with a 1:53.44 to break\u00a0Gia Dalesandro’s\u00a0<\/strong>1:53.67 from last year. Dalesandro won four titles in a row before exhausting her eligibility. Krause is the first Michigan 200 fly champ since\u00a0Melissa Jaeger\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2008.<\/p>\n
Krause used a strong third 50 to pull away from Minnesota’s\u00a0Danielle Nack\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.72) and Ohio State’s\u00a0Meg Bailey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.59). Both Nack and Bailey are seniors.<\/p>\n
Rutgers’\u00a0Francesca Stoppa\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.95), Purdue’s\u00a0Emmy Rawson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.45), Indiana’s\u00a0Shelby Koontz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.95), Purdue’s\u00a0Taite Kitchel\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.02) and Michigan’s\u00a0Sierra Schmidt\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.12) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Michigan finished off its meet smashing the meet record with a 3:10.96 to break Wisconsin’s 2015 record by two full seconds.\u00a0Catie DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(48.29),\u00a0Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>(47.43),\u00a0Daria Pyshnenko\u00a0<\/strong>(47.96) and\u00a0Gabby DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(47.28) swam for the Wolverines and capped off their third straight Big Ten team title.<\/p>\n
Ohio State finished in second thanks to\u00a0Liz Li<\/strong>‘s 46.90 anchor leg. The Buckeyes swam a 3:13.35 ahead of Wisconsin (3:14.12) and Minnesota (3:14.38).<\/p>\n
