The new legislation will require any amateur sporting organization to report any accusations of sexual abuse to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/02\/14\/trump-signs-law-prevent-abuse-athletes-response-usa-gymnastics-scandal\/336879002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a report in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IndyStar<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the new law \u201caims to fix a patchwork of state reporting rules by requiring adults who interact with amateur athletes to report suspected child abuse, including sexual abuse, within 24 hours to local law enforcement. The statute of limitations on abuse will not begin until the victim realizes she has been abused.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law comes in the wake of the #MeToo movement and the large number of sexual harassment and abuse allegations that have come to light recently, including the trial of <\/span><b>Larry Nassar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the doctor who was accused of abusing more than 150 women over more than 20 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse in the swimming community has also come to light, most recently when Olympian <\/span><b>Ariana Kukors <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2009-world-champion-ariana-kukors-alleges-former-coach-sean-hutchison-sexually-abused-her\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused longtime coach <\/span><b>Sean Hutchison <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of several years of harassment and abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including grooming that she said began at 13 years-old and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/update-usa-swimming-statement-on-involvement-in-sean-hutchison-case\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual abuse that began when she was just 16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
