THE Virginia 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay squads kicked off the 2012 ACC Women&#39;s Swimming &#038; Diving Championship on Wednesday with a sweep for the Cavaliers. 17 different relay teams posted NCAA B qualifying times in the two races.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia leads North Carolina \u2013 who finished second in both relays \u2013 by an 80-68 score. NC State sits in third with a score of 56, just ahead of Florida State (54), and Maryland (51). Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech are tied for sixth place at 48 points apiece, with Duke (47) and Miami (46) just behind. Clemson (38) and Boston College (24) round out the field after the first day.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Charlotte Clarke, juniors Meredith Cavalier and Lauren Perdue, and senior Kelly Flynn got the first victory of the championships for Virginia in the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:39.03, a new Christiansburg Aquatic Center record. The Tar Heels touched the wall in 1:39.64, and Miami came in third in 1:40.10.<\/p>\n<p>In the second and final event of the night, Virginia claimed its fifth consecutive 800-yard relay title with a pool-record time of 7:03.56. The team of Rachel Naurath, Caroline Kenney, Emily Dicus, and Perdue clinched the first day lead with the win. The Tar Heels finished in second with 7:06.91, and NC State earned a podium spot with a time of 7:14.79.<\/p>\n<p>Both winning relay teams earned 2012 All-ACC honors with their victories.<\/p>\n<p>The championship continues Thursday with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and 50-yard freestyle preliminaries at 11 a.m. Finals in those events, along with the 200-yard freestyle relay, will begin at 7 p.m. The men&#39;s three-meter diving prelims are scheduled 1 p.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m. The women&#39;s one-meter prelims are at 3:15 p.m. with the finals at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Live coverage of the finals on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday can be seen live on theACC.com starting at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><b>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World Magazine.
