KIHEI, Maui, Hawaii, February 15. TWO boys were able to better state records for the second consecutive year during the Hawaii State Swimming Championships Feb. 10-11 in Kihei. Renny Richmond, a junior at Seabury Hall, bettered the 48.04 he posted at last year's state meet in the 100 fly with this year's swim of 47.57. He missed setting a second state record by just 6-hundredths in the 50 free with his 20.52 victory.
\nPunahou senior Spencer Madanay scored more than 100 points from his record-setting set of dives last year (486.10), amassing a total of 581.10 in the diving event for his new state record.<\/p>\n
Kamehameha Schools-Kapala won the boys competition with 52.5 points on the strength of their relay sweep. Juniors Kale Ai, Kevin Hartley, Kaikena Naone plus freshman Kanoa Kaleoaloha put together a 1:37.90 for the 200 medley relay win; sophomore Ryan Stack came on board in place of Ai for the 200 free relay victory (1:25.88); Naone, Ai, junior Sean Terada and Stack combined for a 3:12.15 triumph in the 400 free relay. Stack also brought home an individual title with his 46.65 in the 100 free.<\/p>\n
Punahou School, on the strength of Madanay's diving and sophomore Jack Woo's first-place 58.47 in the 100 breast, collected 33 points, good for second place. Mililani took third with 26, followed by Seabury Hall (24) and Iolani (22). Iolani was led by double-event champion Kacy Johnson. The senior collected wins in both the 200 IM (1:51.41) and 500 free (4:32.16).<\/p>\n
Austin Hirstein, a junior at Island Pacific Academy, grabbed first in the 100 back (50.83); Kalaheo junior Jacob Urbano, who finished second to Hirstein with his 52.78, took first in the 200 free (1:40.52).<\/p>\n
On the girls side, Punahou School out-pointed Mid-Pacific Institute, 47-43, for the team title. Iolani grabbed the third spot with 29 points, with Kauai fourth (21) and Kealakehe fifth (17).<\/p>\n
Punahou's 200 free relay quartet (seniors Sara Kahanamoku-Shelling, Courtney Miller and Zoe Namba, plus sophomore Roxy Kiesling) defeated Kauai's team (freshmen Kate Machorek and Yasmine Ware, with juniors Kaitlin Santos and Sophie Britzmann) 1:40.90-1:40.93. They had an easier time of it in the 400 free relay, cranking out a 3:34.51 to Mid-Pacific's 3:35.96. Mid-Pacific's team of freshmen Rebecca Walton, Lena Hayakawa, Gayla McQuaid with sophomore Summer Harrison, snagged the 200 medley relay win in 1:50.22. <\/p>\n
Punahou sophomore Jasmine Mau emerged as the only double-event girls champion with her 5:02.48 in the 500 free and 2:04.38 in the 200 IM. Mid-Pacific's Harrison brought home a win in the 100 free (51.39). Third-place Iolani's Aja Grande, a sophomore, topped the field in the 100 breast (1:05.33). Kauai's Ware cruised to a 23.84 victory in the 50 free. <\/p>\n
Other event winners included Hilo junior Beth Tsuha in the 200 free (1:54.42), Hawaii Prep junior Anu Nihipali in the 100 back (57.24) and Maui Prep freshman Danielle Jefferies in the 100 fly (57.81).
