{"id":294918,"date":"2018-02-08T06:28:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T13:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=294918"},"modified":"2018-02-08T14:11:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T21:11:35","slug":"update-usa-swimming-statement-on-involvement-in-sean-hutchison-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/update-usa-swimming-statement-on-involvement-in-sean-hutchison-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: USA Swimming Statement on Involvement in Sean Hutchison, Ariana Kukors Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In reports from various sources, 2009 World Champion\u00a0<strong>Ariana Kukors\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2009-world-champion-ariana-kukors-alleges-former-coach-sean-hutchison-sexually-abused-her\/\" target=\"_blank\">alleges that her former coach\u00a0<strong>Sean Hutchison\u00a0<\/strong>sexually assaulted her<\/a> when she was 16 and continued to have sexual contact with her until she was 24.<\/p>\n<p>Kukors said Hutchison began grooming her for a sexual relationship when she was 13 while she was a swimmer at KING Aquatic Club in Seattle.\u00a0Hutchison has not been criminally charged as the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, USA Swimming\u00a0received a formal complaint about Hutchison&#8217;s alleged &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; relationship with then 21-year-old Kukors \u2013 a full private investigation was then completed by the organization.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2018\/02\/07\/swimming-star-ariana-kukors-alleges-sean-hutchison-sexually-abused-her\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Daily News,\u00a0<\/em>former U.S. national team director\u00a0<strong>Mark Schubert<\/strong>\u00a0acknowledged that he\u00a0reported rumors about the relationship between Hutchison and Kukors to the\u00a0<em>Washington Post\u00a0<\/em>in December 2010.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-investigation-of-coach-sean-hutchison-finds-no-inappropriate-relationship\/\" target=\"_blank\">no evidence of such relationship was found<\/a>. On Feb. 14, 2011, the following statement was released:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;We value the well-being of all of our members and false statements or rumors can be extremely detrimental to our athlete protection efforts,&#8221; said <strong>Susan Woessner<\/strong>, USA Swimming&#8217;s Athlete Protection Officer. &#8220;We want to encourage those with credible and specific information to always come forward, and those who would spread false rumors disrespect this effort.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, according to USA Swimming the organization recently sent the 2010 case file to the Center for Safe Sport after hearing of the new\u00a0investigation regarding Hutchison in January 2018. According to the statement, Kukors&#8217; recent public statement\u00a0was the first time that\u00a0USA Swimming was made aware that she had been sexually abused as a minor.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new statement from USA Swimming,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cDuring the USA Swimming investigation, both Ariana and Hutchison, as well as Ariana\u2019s sister, <strong>Emily<\/strong>, unequivocally denied the existence of a romantic or sexual relationship.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cWith the denials from both parties, the investigation provided no basis to conclude that a Code of Conduct violation occurred, and the case was closed. Hutchison left coaching shortly thereafter but remains a member of USA Swimming as the owner of a member club based in Seattle.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>The organization also said\u00a0that they stand by Kukors in coming forward and will support her throughout this process.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Read the full statement from USA Swimming below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"m_-6032634228892742336compose-container\">\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAriana Kukors\u2019 recent public statement marked the first time USA Swimming learned of the allegations that Sean Hutchison sexually abused Ariana when she was a minor. Our hearts go out to Ariana and the difficulty she has gone through to reach this point of disclosure. We fully support her in her case for answers and justice and applaud her courage in sharing her story in an effort to empower victims and protect athletes.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn 2010, USA Swimming became aware of a rumored relationship between Hutchison and then 21-year-old Ariana via a third-party.
