College Park, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams each opened the 2001-02 season by defeating Howard and losing to Maryland Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The men beat Howard, 117-31, and fell to the Terrapins, 118-52, while the women defeated the Bison, 131-30, and lost to Maryland, 132-41.<\/p>\n
The Blue Jay men were led by Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ\/Bernards\/West Morris Central), who won the 500 yard freestyle in 4:44.37. The Hopkins team of Mark Levin (Fairfax, VA\/W.T. Woodson), Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL\/Dreyfoos School of the Arts),
\nArmstrong, and William Freund (Linwood, NJ\/Mainland Regional) took the 450 yard freestyle crescendo relay in 3:35.05, while John Balfour II (Plano, TX\/Plano East), Dave Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY\/Honeoye Falls-Lima), and Brett Fisher (North Oaks, MN\/Mounds View) placed second in the 300 yard backstroke in 2:41.02<\/p>\n
John Kleinman (North Oaks, MN\/Mounds View) finished second in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:14.94.<\/p>\n
For the Hopkins women, Ashley Shivley (Moraga, CA\/Campolindo), Melanie McLenithan (Sanger, CA\/Sanger), and Lauren Thompson (Flushing, NY\/Horace Mann) took the 300 yard backstroke relay in 3:06.17 to lead the Blue Jays. Individually, Stephanie Harbeson
\n(Harriman, NY\/The Peddie School) placed second in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:07.54, while Nontawan Benja-Athon (Port Washington, NY\/Schreiber) finished second in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:40.64.<\/p>\n
The Hopkins men return to action Saturday by hosting Navy at 12 noon, while the women will compete in the Loyola Invitational on November 2-3.<\/p>\n
