Look for interviews, conference predictions and the best coverage of the sport in America and beyond.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-240391\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/SCIAC.png\" alt=\"SCIAC\" width=\"225\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The past three years the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesciac.org\/sports\/wwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference<\/strong><\/a> (SCIAC) has been a two-team race, as Pomona-Pitzer and Whitter have battled for the right to represent the SCIAC in the NCAA tournament. Last year, the Sagehens interrupted a two-year championship run by the Poets, as Pomona-Pitzer captured a 9-3 victory and made head coach <strong>Alex Rodriguez<\/strong> a double SCIAC winner for the year, as his men\u2019s squad had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagehens.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/2017-18\/releases\/20171119oes32k\" target=\"_blank\">qualified<\/a> for the NCAA Men\u2019s tournament the previous fall.<\/p>\n<p>This season looks to be more of the same. Pomona-Pitzer garnered all nine first place votes in the annual SCIAC preseason <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesciac.org\/sports\/wwaterpolo\/2017-18\/releases\/20180121jhdnwf\" target=\"_blank\">coaches\u2019 poll<\/a>. Trailing the Sagehens? Junior <strong>Natalie Hill<\/strong> (27 goals, 24 assists, a team-high 47 steals in 2017) returns for Rodriguez\u2019s squad, as does senior <strong>Morgan McCracken<\/strong>, second behind Hill in points with 51.<\/p>\n<p>Earwood started 29 of the Sagehens\u2019 36 matches last season, and her absence may be the biggest obstacle to a Pomona-Pitzer repeat. Leading the way for the Regals was senior <strong>Kristi McGee<\/strong> (37 goals, 35 steals; second on the team in 2017), a member of 2017 SCIAC First Team. Also returning for Cal Lutheran are senior <strong>Sam Wulfestieg<\/strong> (21 goals) and juniors <strong>Nikki Roe<\/strong>d (47 goals; tops on the squad) and goalie <strong>Bailey Meyer<\/strong> (28 starts in goal last season).<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 Rond brought in seven freshmen to mesh with a core of 18 returners, including nine upperclassmen. Bulldog head coach <strong>Chris Gielen <\/strong>should feel good about his team\u2019s hopes of finishing in the upper half of the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Among third-year players on the Bulldogs\u2019 roster are a pair of goalkeepers:\u00a0<strong>Allison Totzke <\/strong>and<strong> Kelly Grosswendt<\/strong> will again split time in the Redlands\u2019 cage. The Athenas also have five freshmen, none so important as <strong>Chandlyr Denaro<\/strong>, the only goalie on the squad. However, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leopardathletics.com\/sports\/wwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>La Verne<\/strong> <\/a>head men\u2019s and women\u2019s coaching position he now holds is less than an hour away from his hometown\u2014and immersed in the SoCal polo that Beemer grew up with.<\/p>\n<p>After a 6-17 (3-11 in the SCIAC) campaign last fall with the La Verne men\u2019s team, Beemer will look for better results this season with the Leopard women. Luckily, he has <strong>Guarina Garcia<\/strong>\u2014a member of 2017 SCIAC First Team\u2014who returns after an outstanding freshman year that saw the Puerto Rico native hit for 47 goals and a team-leading 30 assists.
