﻿{"id":294499,"date":"2018-02-05T10:45:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T17:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=294499"},"modified":"2018-02-05T10:23:45","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T17:23:45","slug":"harvard-men-yale-women-sweep-h-y-p-meet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/harvard-men-yale-women-sweep-h-y-p-meet\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard Men, Yale Women Sweep H-Y-P Meet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Harvard men&#8217;s swimming and diving team (9-0, 6-0 Ivy) captured its second Ivy League Dual Meet Championship with a sweep of Yale (7-2, 5-2 Ivy) and Princeton (7-4, 5-2 Ivy) at the annual H-Y-P meet.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard beat Yale 242-111 and Princeton 250-103, and Yale hung on to beat Princeton 177-176, the first time they have won in 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Brennan Novak<\/strong> highlighted day two, breaking the Blodgett Pool record in the 500 freestyle. Novak, who earlier this year took down Harvard&#8217;s school record in the event, touched the wall with a time of 4:16.56 \u2013 .15 seconds better than the previous mark set by Yale&#8217;s <strong>Kei Hyogo<\/strong> in last year&#8217;s Ivy League Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Dean Farris<\/strong> took home three first place finishes. After collecting the top-spot in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke on the first day, the Atlanta native finished first in the 100 freestyle on day two with a time of 42.93.<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of the meet, junior <strong>Logan Houck<\/strong> came close to eclipsing the Blodgett Pool record in the mile as he out-swam the rest of the pack. Well ahead of the next closest swimmer, Houck touched the wall with a time of 14:47.39 \u2013 the current Blodgett mark is 14:47.01.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Steven Tan<\/strong> picked up two first place finishes. In the 50 freestyle on day one, Tan edged out Yale&#8217;s<strong> Aaron Greenberg<\/strong> by one-hundredth of a second for first place, touching the wall with a time of 19.86. On the second day, he finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.41.<\/p>\n<p>On the boards, senior <strong>David Pfeifer<\/strong> claimed a first-place finish in the 3-meter dive, posting a score of 359.55.<\/p>\n<p>Yale diver <strong>Christian DeVol<\/strong> captured Yale&#8217;s first event win of the day, finishing first in the 1-meter event with 316.05 points. <strong>Jonathan Rutter<\/strong> took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with at time of 1:57.99.<\/p>\n<p>Princeton\u2019s<strong> Cole Buese<\/strong> won the 200 fly by pushing past Harvard freshman Michael Zarian over the final 25 to win in 1:44.8, the fastest time in the Ivy League this season.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s meet, Yale was shortly behind after completion of the first day, 84-66 against Princeton and 79-71 against Harvard. Both swimmers and divers made a strong comeback the second day to finish the overall competition with scores of 161-139 against Princeton and 162-138 against Harvard.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinter <strong>Bella Hindley<\/strong> flew ahead of the competition, winning the race and breaking the Blodgett Pool record &#8211; last broken in 2012 &#8211; in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.43. To wrap up the first day,<strong> Destiny Nelson<\/strong> won the 400-yard individual medley with a breath-taking time of 4:13.89, finishing more than five seconds ahead of Princeton&#8217;s swimmer who finished second.<\/p>\n<p>Hindley won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.7. Nelson and <strong>Heidi Vanderwel<\/strong> tag-teamed the 200-yard backstroke, finishing first (1:55.93) and second (1:57.06). Butterflier <strong>Maddy Zimmerman<\/strong> won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.15.
