BOISE, Idaho, January 21. BOISE State broke two pool records and won seven events on its way to claiming a 148-114 victory Saturday against Oregon State at the Boise-West Family YMCA. The Broncos' 200-yard medley relay team led off the meet with a win and facility record in 1:44.52. Amber Boucher, who swam the medley relay, clocked the fastest time in West YMCA history to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.28.<\/p>\n
Boucher added another victory in the 100-yard butterfly and helped the 400-yard freestyle squad to a first-place finish in the day's final event. The Broncos also picked up wins from Stephanie North (50- and 100-yard freestyles) and Emily Irvin (500-yard freestyle).<\/p>\n
North pulled away from the field in both of the sprint freestyle events. She clocked a 23.64 in the 50 freestyle to best teammate Stevie Hughey's runner-up time of 24.24. North cruised to victory in a fast final lap of the 100 freestyle, winning in 51.48, nearly a full second in front of the next swimmer. Hughey took third in the 100. In addition to her individual wins, North anchored both of the Broncos' victorious relay teams.<\/p>\n
Irvin also turned in a dominant performance in winning the 500 freestyle. She led by just one tenth of a second at the halfway mark but stretched her lead over the next 150 yards before putting more than two seconds between her and field in the final 100 yards to clock a 5:02.62 and win by nearly five seconds. Irvin took third in the 100-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Once again the Bronco freshmen made their mark on the meet. Jessica Bottelberghe took second twice, against the Beavers. Bottelberghe finished runner up in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke races. She was followed by fellow freshmen in each event, Nikki Cannon took third in the 100, while Sydney Johansen finished third in the longer race.<\/p>\n
Heather Harper, another freshman, was the first Boise State finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke as she took second. Harper clocked a 1:05.12, just 12 one-hundredths of a second behind the winning time. Harper took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Jennifer Cahill had a busy day for the Broncos. Cahill finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:30.28, before climbing back atop the starting blocks for the very next race in the 200 freestyle. She rounded out her meet with a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle and leading off the Broncos' "B" team in the 400 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n
Rachel Heaney, Brooke Balogh and Christine Raininger finished second, third and fourth, respectively, for the Broncos in the 200-yard butterfly. The trio also finished consecutively in the 400-yard individual medley, with Raininger and Heaney switching positions.<\/p>\n
Johansen and Hughey joined Boucher and North on the 400 freestyle relay. Bottelberghe and Harper swam the first two legs of the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n
Boise State is back in action Saturday, Jan. 28, at home against Colorado State. The meet begins at 11 a.m., and will be the final home meet for six seniors.<\/p>\n
