This week, former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor\u00a0Larry Nassar\u00a0<\/strong>was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually abusing more than 150 female athletes<\/a>. In response, USA Swimming is distributing a memo reinforcing its commitment to Safe Sport practices.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the memo directs clubs, coaches and swimming families on how to ensure the safety of athletes as well as how to best educate athletes on Safe Sport practices.<\/p>\n

Many have likely seen, heard or been made aware of the recent sentencing of former sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar.<\/p>\n

As a member of our sport community, you might be asking yourself how this could have happened and what we can do to prevent this from ever happening again.<\/p>\n

We — coaches, athletes, parents, officials, volunteers, team leaders and sport leaders — can commit to prevention and we can commit to speaking up. We can commit to Safe Sport.<\/p>\n

Safe Sport is something we do, every day on every deck. The key to prevention is to create an environment where all members know the rules, are comfortable talking about\u00a0them, and are empowered to recognize and report red flag behavior, boundary violations, and misconduct.<\/p>\n
