{"id":293529,"date":"2018-01-26T05:49:48","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T12:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=293529"},"modified":"2018-01-26T05:49:48","modified_gmt":"2018-01-26T12:49:48","slug":"nick-sloman-chelsea-gubecka-win-big-at-australian-open-water-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nick-sloman-chelsea-gubecka-win-big-at-australian-open-water-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Sloman, Chelsea Gubecka Win Big at Australian Open Water Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunshine Coast swim star\u00a0<strong>Nick Sloman\u00a0<\/strong>looks up at his coaches and mentors every morning and night when he finishes training at Noosa Aquatic Centre and knows he couldn\u2019t be in better hands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 21-year-old trainee Quantity Surveyor took his first major step towards an Olympic dream, winning his first Australian 10km Open Water Championship at Brighton Beach, South Australia today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the women\u2019s event saw 19-year-old, unstoppable, Kawana Waters\u2019 swimmer\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Gubecka<\/strong>\u00a0(2hrs 01.20) add 10km National crown number five and in dominant fashion \u2013 winning by over a minute and a half.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the men\u2019s race it was Sloman (1:53.04) who made his move with 1.25km left of\u00a0 the eight-lap course, swum in near perfect millpond conditions and following his coach\u2019s instructions to the letter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sloman hung on over the final stages in what was a real ding-dong battle to the finish with another strong surf-swim star, 29-year-old Perth City World Championship veteran (1:53.05), Hungary\u2019s <strong>Mark Papp<\/strong> (1:53.08) and Carlile\u2019s ever-present\u00a0<strong>Ollie Signorini\u00a0<\/strong>(1:53.21).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Sloman\u2019s corner is veteran Olympic swim coach\u00a0<strong>John \u201cJR\u201d Rodgers<\/strong>\u00a0who has taken the likes of <strong>Max Metzker<\/strong>, <strong>Graeme Brewer<\/strong>, <strong>Ron McKeon<\/strong>, <strong>Michelle Ford<\/strong>, <strong>Bronte Barratt<\/strong> and <strong>Kylie Palmer<\/strong> amongst others to the Games between 1976 and 2008, with Rodgers comparing Sloman\u2019s mental toughness with that of his 1500m champion,1980 Olympic bronze medallist\u00a0Metzker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And alongside Rodgers is Germany\u2019s celebrated Olympic and World Ironman Triathlete champion <strong>Jan Frodeno<\/strong> \u2013 also a treasured member of the Rodgers group on the Sunshine Coast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Rodgers still has one of Australia\u2019s most respected sports scientists, the original Australian Swim Team exercise physiologist <strong>Dr Bob Treffene<\/strong> overlooking Sloman\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treffene oversaw many great Australian champions \u2013 including <strong>Kieren Perkins<\/strong>, <strong>Grant Hackett<\/strong> and a host of other greats under coaches <strong>John Carew<\/strong>, <strong>Denis Cotterell<\/strong> and Australia\u2019s most successful head coach <strong>Don Talbot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sloman used all the encouraging words of wisdom from \u201cTeam Rodgers\u201d to win him his maiden National title.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to put yourself in the front of the pack and make sure that when you do go that you don\u2019t hesitate because if you slow down again\u2026 the lactic acid will build and you want be able to pick up that pace again; once you go you go,\u201d said Sloman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving a coach like JR is a dream; he has coached many Olympians so I\u2019ve just got to learn from his experiences and be the best I can be\u2026he\u2019s a tough cookie sometimes but he\u2019s soft hearted and he\u2019s basically my granddad although my dad Lloyd is by far my biggest supporter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sloman said he trained slightly different to his competitors and doesn\u2019t do as many kilometres as many of them, because he doesn\u2019t\u00a0 have the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s where the science and the \u201cold school\u201d edge comes in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI only do about 50-55 kilometres a week but it includes a lot of heart rate sets and probably the max set I do is 10 x 500m,\u201d said Sloman, who has his sights set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t go over two hours in a training session and only about nine times a week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJR has been working with Dr Bob to get the most out of my training and I\u2019ve got limited time (in the pool) because of work and University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI work full time in a Quantity Surveying Firm and that takes most of my time and I\u2019ve also got to go to the Queensland University of Technology (QUT)\u00a0 in Brisbane which is a two-hour drive from where I train and that takes an afternoon away from training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI basically train by myself but triathlon great\u00a0Jan Frodeno has been a great influence; he\u2019s at the elite of Kona and a former Olympic champion and he rubs all of that world championship experience off on me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe surf background also really helps, especially right at the end when you have to change pace; it\u2019s definitely a good stepping stone into Open Water; I focus on getting in front and breaking away to the side little bit because I don\u2019t want anyone on\u00a0my hip, that will slow you down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the women\u2019s race it was Gubecka who made her move at the five-kilometre mark when she thought it was a case of either now or never and the move paid off with Gubecka scoring a resounding victory over Mt Creek Mooloolaba\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Kareena Lee<\/strong>\u00a0(2:02.53) and fellow Kawana Waters swimmer\u00a0<strong>Mackenzie Brazier<\/strong>\u00a0(2:03.13).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some of the field swam towards to the feeding pontoon at the half-way mark, Guebecka decided to take a risk and \u201cgo for broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m pretty stoked,\u201d said Gubecka, \u201cIt\u2019s a tough event and to be able to chalk-up five titles in in a quality field like this is awesome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the five kilometre mark I decided to take a risk, and if ever it was a year to take risks it was this year, and I needed to test myself so I put on a spurt on for a breakaway and it worked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI must admit I was a little nervous before the race with maximum points (20) on offer towards Pan Pacific Team Selection. I\u2019ll now go chasing top 10 finishes on World Cup events and to podium somewhere would be ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile in other events Kawana Waters swimmer\u00a0<strong>Bailey<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Armstrong<\/strong>\u00a0(1:53.19) won the 19-year-old 10km event from Perth City\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Rollo<\/strong>\u00a0(1:53.25) and Seas The Limit\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Cormac Guthrie<\/strong>\u00a0(1:53.25).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chandler\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mikayka<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Messer<\/strong>\u00a0(2:05.22) won the 19 years girl\u2019s 10km from TSS Aquatics\u2019\u00a0<strong>Bianca<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Crisp<\/strong>\u00a0(2:05.45) and Rackley\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jessica<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Lavin<\/strong>\u00a0(2:05.45.01).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perth City\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Reilly<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Kennedy<\/strong>\u00a0(1:53.25) won the 18 years boys 10km gold from Somerset GC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Riley Clout<\/strong>\u00a0(1:54.13) and Miami\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(2:00.55) while Yeronga Park\u2019<strong>Laura Brosna\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.39) won the 18 years girls 10km from TSS Aquatic\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Madison Armstrong\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.48) and Miami\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jade Sleek<\/strong>\u00a0(2:05.55).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 16 years girls 7.5km event, Perth City\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Chloe Green\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.42) won the gold medal from Randwick City\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Isabella Coughlan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.44) and Miami\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Ashleigh Allred<\/strong>(1:35.40) while the boys went to Hong Kong\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Willian Thorley\u00a0<\/strong>(1:26.35) from SOPAC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Tomas Kaposi<\/strong>\u00a0(1:28.49) with Perth City\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Flynn Mason<\/strong>\u00a0(1:31.28) third.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17 years boys 7.5km championship went to recent Lorne Pier to Pub winner, Lawnton\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Hayden Cotter<\/strong>\u00a0(1:23.02) from Breakers WA\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jack Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0and TSS Aquatics<strong>James Utley-Doer<\/strong>\u00a0who dead-heated in 1:25.56.01.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in the 17 girls 7.5km it was University of NSW\u00a0<strong>Frances Shires<\/strong>\u00a0(1:33.47) who won the day from Indooroopilly\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Kara Svenson<\/strong>\u00a0(1:34.44) and Nudgee College\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jessica Moat<\/strong>\u00a0(1:34.44.01).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Press release courtesy of Swimming Australia.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunshine Coast swim star\u00a0Nick Sloman\u00a0looks up at his coaches and mentors every morning and night when he finishes training at Noosa Aquatic Centre and knows he couldn\u2019t be in better<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":46,"featured_media":185188,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"dois","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[3,11],"tags":[65842,65850,65846,65844,56914,30771,27990,65851,65848,4083,1227,58163,2468,65847,63445,65857,61002,65852,65855,4504,65843,25599,65845,65849,65841,32866,36576,5396,65856,65853,65839,25089,65854,7294],"class_list":["post-293529","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-open-water","tag-2018-australian-open-water-championships","tag-ashleigh-allred","tag-bailey-armstrong","tag-bianca-crisp","tag-bob-treffene","tag-bronte-barratt","tag-chelsea-gubecka","tag-chloe-green","tag-daniel-miller","tag-denis-cotterell","tag-don-talbot","tag-fina-open-water-world-cup","tag-grant-hackett","tag-isabella-coughlan","tag-jack-wilson","tag-jade-sleek","tag-jan-frodeno","tag-jessica-lavin","tag-jessica-moat","tag-john-carew","tag-kara-svenson","tag-kylie-palmer","tag-laura-brosna","tag-lloyd","tag-mackenzie-brazier","tag-mark-papp","tag-max-metzker","tag-michelle-ford","tag-nicholas-rollo","tag-nick-sloman","tag-ollie-signorini","tag-open-water-swimming","tag-riley-clout","tag-ron-mckeon"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v24.3 (Yoast SEO v24.3) -
