Opening the 2018 season Saturday with narrow losses to #2 UCLA and #5 Arizona State, the Wolverines justified their #8 <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/polls\/2018-womens-polls-week-1-january-17\/\" target=\"_blank\">ranking<\/a> in the latest CWPA Women\u2019s Varsity Poll\u2014and their position as their conference\u2019s top team.<\/p>\n<p>At the UC Santa Barbara Tournament last weekend, <a href=\"http:\/\/mgoblue.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Michigan<\/strong><\/a> pushed both the Bruins and the Sun Devils to the limit in the type of tight, early season contests that pay dividends later in the year. Last year, the Wolverines again qualified for an NCAA berth, only to fall 12-6 to USC in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardi\u2019s team is anchored by sophomore goalie <strong>Heidi Ritner<\/strong>, who in her freshman year backstopped the Wolverines in 36 of a possible 37 matches. Also returning are Michigan\u2019s top four scorers: senior <strong>Caroline Anderson<\/strong> (45 goals, 68 assists \u2013 113 points), juniors <strong>Kim Johnson<\/strong> (59, 53 \u2013 112) and <strong>Julia Sellers<\/strong> (56, 35 \u2013 91) as well as sophomore <strong>Maddy Steere<\/strong> (51, 49 \u2013 100) who, like freshman teammate <strong>Sofie Pontr\u00e9<\/strong>, hails from Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Absent from this list is CWPA Player of the Year <strong>Allison Skaags<\/strong>, (team-leading 61 goals) before graduating last spring. But it\u2019s unlikely that the Wolverines\u2014who have gone 23-1 in CWPA matches since Leonardi\u2019s arrival\u2014will falter in conference play this year. There\u2019s just too much depth on the East\u2019s best squad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Match-Up:<\/strong> UCLA, Saturday, January 27, Ann Arbor, MI<\/p>\n<p>Despite having only two teams in the conference, the Big Ten is well represented at the top of the CWPA. <a href=\"http:\/\/iuhoosiers.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Indiana<\/strong><\/a>, currently ranked 13th in the country, is second only to long-time men\u2019s basketball rival Michigan\u2014this is women\u2019s water polo, after all. Head Coach <strong>Ryan Castle<\/strong> has also fashioned a multi-national line-up, with players from as far away as Cape Town, South Africa, to Brisbane, Australia to Toronto\u2014a total of seven players in all. To accomplish this, his squad will have to leapfrog both Indiana and Michigan for a CWPA title and the conference\u2019s automatic qualifier. Leading scorers <strong>Zsofia Polak<\/strong> (92 goals, 56 assists, 148 points in 2017), <strong>Lena Kotanchyan<\/strong> (84 goals, 33 assists, 117 points) and goalie <strong>Josette Santos<\/strong> (27 starts) represent a group of seven seniors that will provide veteran leadership. With the graduation of its two top scorers\u2014<strong>Marisa Kolokotronis<\/strong> (69 goals) and <strong>Jessica Heilman<\/strong> (68 goals)\u2014Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/catching-up-with-brown-water-polos-felix-mercado\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Felix Mercado\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a>team will need to rely on juniors <strong>Carmen Rosas<\/strong> (62 goals) and <strong>Allison Woo<\/strong> (29 goals) and a strong recruiting class of six freshmen, including 5-9 attacker <strong>Kaitlyn Cook. <\/strong>Backstopping Brown again in 2018 will be senior <strong>Marisol Dakan<\/strong> (17 appearances in 2017); sophomore <strong>Lauren Burns<\/strong> will also see time in the Bruin net.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Match-Up: <\/strong>Harvard, Wednesday, April 11, Providence, RI<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/goprincetontigers.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Princeton<\/strong><\/a> has to be reeling due to multiple loses; first, <strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong>, the only player from an Eastern team to ever win a Peter J. Cutino Award, graduated and is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ashleigh-johnson-arrives-in-catania\/\" target=\"_blank\">playing professionally<\/a> for Catania in the Italian Leagues.
