PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 13. THE University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team recorded six first-place finishes and lead Maryland (93.5-73.5) after the first day of the competition held at Trees Pool on Friday afternoon.
\nIn the first event of the meet, junior Erik Moore claimed first on the 1M board with 305.20 points. Sophomore Aaron Snyder placed third in the same event, scoring 300.90 points.<\/p>\n
Next, sophomore Otto Pagel outlasted his Maryland counterpart at the wall as the 200 medley relay team placed first at 1:31.43. Pagel aided the team of junior Adam Maczewski, senior Ben Solari and freshman Kourosh Ahani in the victory.<\/p>\n
Individually, Ahani won the 100 fly (49.98) and Maczewski touched for first in the 100 back (48.72).<\/p>\n
In another first-place performance, freshman Luke Nosbisch captured the meet crown in the 1650 free with a time of 16:03.31.<\/p>\n
The 200 free relay team gave the Panthers their sixth first-place finish after sophomore Alexander Rodenkirk touched the wall at 1:23.20. Rodenkirk anchored the team of junior Hussein Medhat-Mohamed, Ahani and freshman Austin Caldwell.<\/p>\n
Medhat-Mohamed was also second in the 100 free (45.48), while Rodenkirk and Pagel finished third and fourth in the same event.<\/p>\n
In the 400 IM, senior Rousseau Kluever and freshman Jon Lierley were second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Turning in third-place performances tonight were Lierley (100 fly- 50.45), senior Morne Boshoff (1650 free-16:23.90) and Pierre-Antoine Meunier (100 breast-57.57).<\/p>\n
Junior Joanna Budzis of Pitt's women's swimming and diving team earned a first-place finish Friday evening, to give the Panthers a lead over Richmond (114-53) and Villanova (113-54) at Trees Pool. Pitt trails Maryland (109-58) in the two-day meet.<\/p>\n
Despite being challenged in the final lap of the 400 IM, Budzis captured a first-place finish of 4:22.14. Budzis' time is a current season best for the squad.<\/p>\n
Later, Budzis anchored the third-place 200 free relay team. The squad combined for a time of 1:36.51 and consisted of freshman Dani des Tombe, junior Kelsey Herbst and freshman Lauren Mills.<\/p>\n
In another top-three performance, the 200 medley relay team finished second with a time of 1:45.49. The relay was made up of sophomores Renee Deschenes and Veronica Lee and freshmen Cam Dixon and des Tombe. <\/p>\n
Individually, des Tombe was second in the 100 free (52.17), Deschenes finished third in the 100 back (56.64) and Lee was fourth in the 100 fly (56.74).<\/p>\n
Additionally, Herbst touched the wall third in the 1650 free with a time of 17:04.44.<\/p>\n
In the sole diving event of the day, junior Brittany DiSanti finished third on the 1M board with 244.60 points.<\/p>\n
The Panthers are back in action at 9 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n
