{"id":292488,"date":"2018-01-17T07:00:46","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T14:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=292488"},"modified":"2018-01-18T18:09:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T01:09:35","slug":"acc-swimming-weekly-preview-virginia-to-welcome-nc-state-and-north-carolina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-swimming-weekly-preview-virginia-to-welcome-nc-state-and-north-carolina\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC Weekly Preview: Virginia to Welcome NC State and North Carolina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Possibly the most anticipated dual meet of the ACC swimming and diving regular season will take place Friday in Charlottesville, Va., as the reigning conference champions for both the men and the women come to town: NC State.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolfpack men, behind\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress<\/strong>, have yet to lose this season, and they surely will not be challenged by the Cavalier men (coming off a tough loss to Virginia Tech) until they get to the NCAA championships in March. That squad is by far the best men&#8217;s or women&#8217;s unit in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the women&#8217;s meet that should draw so much interest, as the undefeated Cavalier women face off against the team that knocked them off a season ago. UVA was riding a nine-year winning streak at the ACC championships before NC State upset the Cavaliers in a January dual meet in Raleigh and then dominated the conference meet.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and lest we forget: the man now leading the Cavaliers was one of the key forces in the Wolfpack&#8217;s rise to elite status. Friday will mark\u00a0the first time UVA head coach and former NC State associate head coach\u00a0<strong>Todd DeSorbo\u00a0<\/strong>has faced off against his former team since departing Raleigh in August.<\/p>\n<p>In late August, shortly after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/todd-desorbo-named-head-coach-of-university-of-virginia-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\">DeSorbo departed for Virginia<\/a>, NC State head coach\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/braden-holloway-and-the-rise-of-nc-state-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Braden Holloway\u00a0<\/strong>explained that he was bummed to lose an excellent coach<\/a> &#8212; and good friend &#8212; from his staff, but that he was happy for DeSorbo&#8217;s opportunity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I told the team, \u2018We\u2019re not going to replace him. You can\u2019t.\u2019 He\u2019s a unique individual, he\u2019s had a unique role with our program, and he\u2019s really good at what he does,&#8221; Holloway said. &#8220;We\u2019ve rearranged some things within our program to keep moving forward. Our team is competitive, our coaches are competitive, so we\u2019ll continue to progress, continue to do what we need to do to be successful, and it\u2019ll be a little more fun of a rivalry.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah, yes, a rivalry. For the women, both teams lost key pieces from last season &#8212; think\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>from the Cavaliers and\u00a0<strong>Alexia Zevnik<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kayla Brumbaum<\/strong> for the Wolfpack &#8212; but plenty of great swimmers remain. For NC State,\u00a0<strong>Hannah Moore\u00a0<\/strong>is arguably the country&#8217;s best distance swimmer not named\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, while DeSorbo has worked his magic on the likes of\u00a0<strong>Caitlin Cooper\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Jen Marrkand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One day later, North Carolina will also make its way to Charlottesville to face Virginia. In that one, the UVA women should have the advantage over\u00a0<strong>Caroline Baldwin\u00a0<\/strong>and co., while the UNC freshman class could lead the men to a victory over the Cavaliers that has been a rare accomplishment in recent years.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other Meets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of rivalry meets, the Louisville Cardinals will receive a visit from their in-state rival, the Kentucky Wildcats. While\u00a0<strong>Arthur Albiero&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>Cardinals\u00a0have become a staple in the top ten in both the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s NCAA championships,\u00a0<strong>Lars Jorgensen\u00a0<\/strong>has helped make Kentucky&#8217;s women nationally relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Neither women&#8217;s team is particularly deep, but each one has its stars:\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>for the Cardinals and sophomore backstrokers\u00a0<strong>Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/video-interview-big-accomplishment-for-ali-galyers-national-title\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ali Galyer<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for the Wildcats.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the only other intra-ACC meet on the schedule is Notre Dame at Florida State.
