Look for interviews, conference predictions and the best coverage of the sport in America and beyond.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Swimming World<\/em> last checked in on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women\u2019s water polo conference \u2014at the 2017 Women\u2019s NCAA Water Polo Tournament last May\u2014Stanford\u2019s <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/steffens-goal-all-around-effort-leads-stanford-past-ucla-in-2017-ncaa-title-match\/\" target=\"_blank\">breaking the hearts<\/a> of Bruin fans with a last-second shot that gave The Cardinal their fifth NCAA title in eight straight trips to the championship game. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mpsf-tournament-central-catching-up-with-stanford-coach-john-tanner\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>John Tanner\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> squad is incredibly deep; Stone is replaced by senior <strong>Julia Hermann<\/strong>, who backstopped Stanford to the 2016 title match. Replacing Jackovich is freshman <strong>Aria Fischer<\/strong>, who not only was a member of the U.S. gold medal-winning squad at the 2017 World Championships, but is the sister of Makenzie, a sophomore who was second on the team last year (58 goals) behind Steffens.<\/p>\n<p>Neushul\u2019s scoring will likely be picked up by junior <strong>Jordan Raney<\/strong> (29 goals), who came into her own last year as both a Cardinal and a member of Team USA.<\/p>\n<p>So, even though the greatest female player in Stanford history has graduated, fear not Cardinal fans! All is sure to be fine on The Farm when it comes to women\u2019s water polo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Matchup:<\/strong> UCLA, Saturday, April 7, Los Angeles, CA<\/p>\n<p>Even though they lost when it counted most, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclabruins.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UCLA<\/strong><\/a> did win the conference last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/05\/02\/ucla-shuts-down-stanford-in-mpsf-wwp-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">beating Stanford<\/a> 6-3 in the MPSF title match. They had such a depth of senior talent, including <strong>Rachel Fattal<\/strong>, <strong>Kodi Hill<\/strong>, <strong>Alexa Tielmann<\/strong> and <strong>Alys Williams<\/strong>, that the disappointment after the loss in last year\u2019s NCAA final\u00a0 \u2014 UCLA\u2019s third in four years to Stanford \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uclas-brooks-steps-down-after-8-seasons-stanford-is-likely-culprit\/\" target=\"_blank\">likely<\/a> led to Brooks\u2019 departure. Her accomplishments at such a young age, including Olympic gold in the 2016 Rio Games, are comparable to Steffens&#8217;. This summer she was named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/sports\/tn-dpt-sp-usa-water-polo-finals-20170728-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">MVP<\/a> at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, where her 16 goals led the Americans to a second-straight FINA title. <strong>Carlee Kapana<\/strong>, entering her third year in Westwood, was the back-up goalie to Stone on Team USA. Photo Courtesy: SIPA USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Bruins added four freshmen \u2014 Brooks clearly had success recruiting \u2014 but perhaps the biggest UCLA addition is at head coach, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-wright-to-lead-ucla-mens-and-womens-water-polo-teams\/\"><strong>Adam Wright<\/strong><\/a> steps in. Will the addition of a new coach make that much difference? It\u2019s his first time leading the women\u2019s program at UCLA \u2014 Wright was an assistant under <strong>Adam Krikorian<\/strong> in 2009 \u2014 but the former Bruin\u2019s (\u201901) record of success on the men\u2019s side is second to none. The 2017 UCLA men were picked fourth in the MPSF preseason poll, and all they did was win the national championship. If Wright produces men\u2019s and women\u2019s championship in the same calendar year, he\u2019ll join Krikorian as the only Bruin coaches to have achieved that feat.<\/p>\n<p>Like their men, the UCLA women will need to prove early in the season that they are for real, and only MPSF opponents can do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Matchup: <\/strong>California, Saturday, March 10, Berkeley, CA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jovan Vavic\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/usctrojans.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>USC<\/strong><\/a> team has sustained significant losses due to graduation. Irreplaceable \u2014 because they were both superb players and twins, are <strong>Ioanna<\/strong> and <strong>Stephania <\/strong><strong>Haralabidis<\/strong>. They\u2019ve added <strong>Paige Hauschild<\/strong>, who spent the summer with Team USA, and <strong>Sabrina Garabet<\/strong>, a lefty who will look to follow the path of <strong>Stephania<\/strong> <strong>Haralabidis, <\/strong>a 2016 Cutino Award winner. Will they be enough to get the Trojans to the top of the MPSF?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Matchup: <\/strong>UCLA, Saturday, April 21, Los Angeles, CA (Uytengsu)<\/p>\n<p>In her first season in Berkeley, <strong>Coralee Simmons<\/strong> had <a href=\"http:\/\/calbears.com\/index.aspx?path=wwpolo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cal<\/strong><\/a> playing its best at season\u2019s end. The Golden Bears went into the2017 MPSF Tournament and gave top-seed UCLA all they could handle before dropping a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/04\/30\/1-ucla-hangs-beat-cal-advance-mpsf-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">9-8 decision<\/a> in the semifinals, then led USC by one late in the game before dropping an 8-6 decision in the third place game.
