ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 7. THE No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving won 12-of-16 events in defeating No. 10 Indiana, 166-130, in a dual meet on Saturday (Jan. 7) at Canham Natatorium.<\/p>\n
In the meet that ran simultaneously with the U-M women's team, junior Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y.\/Rye) and sophomore Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn.\/McCallie School) took first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as Feeley clocked a 9:15.94 and Ryan followed with a 9:20.67 to collect 13 team points for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J.\/Rumson-Fair Haven) garnered Michigan's second win on the afternoon in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:38.36. He was followed by sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich.\/Grandville) in third with a 1:39.28 and junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio\/St. Francis deSales),who closed out the point \u00ad\u00ad winners for Michigan with a fourth-place finish (1:40.75).<\/p>\n
Michigan then rattled off five consecutive event wins, beginning with junior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan\/St. Mary's International) in the 100-backstroke, notching a time of 47.58. Freshman Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta\/Stratchcona) followed with an event-winning 56.32 in the 100-yard breastroke, while senior standout Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn.\/Towson) won his signature event, the 200-yard butterfly, with a 1:47.07.<\/p>\n
The roll continued in the 50-yard freestyle, as the Wolverines earned first-, second- and third-place finishes. Miguel Ortiz (20.33) was followed by freshman brother Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan\/St. Mary's International) with a 20.55. Junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va.\/Blacksburg), who entered the race ranked No. 5 in the nation, placed third in the event with a 20.79.<\/p>\n
Funk collected his second win on the afternoon in the 200-yard breaststroke later in the meet, clocking a 2:02.64. The following race featured Jaeger's second victorious effort on the meet, as he swam a 4:27.43 after entering the meet ranked No. 2 in the nation in the event.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines earned a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly, as sophomore John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz.\/Phoenix Brophy) took the event crown with a 47.69 after entering the race ranked No. 4 in the nation. Madwed then followed with a 48.91 to stretch the Michigan lead to 151-75 with two events remaining.<\/p>\n
Another Michigan swimmer earned a win in its signature event in the 400-meter individual medley, as sophomore Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.\/Chesterton), ranked second nationally in the event, touched the wall with a time of 3:57.12.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines closed out the afternoon with a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The quartet Wojciechowski, junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio\/St. Francis deSales), Madwed and sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich.\/Grandville) registered a time of 3:02.07 for the 12th and final event win of the meet.<\/p>\n
In diving competition, sophomore Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass.\/Berkshire School) led the Wolverines, scoring season highs in each event. He placed third in the three-meter competition with a score of 344.25, and in the one-meter portion of the event, Lee placed fourth, registering a 321.23.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines return to action next weekend, as the squad travels to Dallas, Texas, for the SMU Classic. Day one commences on Friday (Jan. 13) at 6 p.m. CST, while Saturday's action begins at noon CST.<\/p>\n
