January 3.  HOW times are changing.<\/p>\n<p>Registration opened for the <a href=&quot;http:\/\/greatsaltlakeopenwater.com\/&quot;target=&quot;_blank&quot;>Great Salt Lake Open Water Marathon Swim<\/a> opened up at precisely 12:00 midnight on New Year&#39;s day 2012. Between the two events (1 mile and 8 miles), the longer marathon swim filled up in less than two days.<\/p>\n<p>The 8-mile race is capped at 12 swimmers, but last year it took 6 weeks to fill up.  Race director <a href=&quot;http:\/\/gordsswimlog.blogspot.com\/&quot;target=&quot;_blank&quot;>Gordon Gridley<\/a> explains, &quot;<i>With extreme swimming being the buzz lately, I think swimming in the Great Salt Lake qualifies as being extreme.  That appeals to a lot of people.  We are awaiting approval from the Utah State Parks to expand the field of swimmers to possibly 15.
