Stay tuned for more in-depth coverage of the sport.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the fourth straight year\u2014and eighth in the last nine years\u2014the Stanford women\u2019s water polo team was picked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpsports.org\/sports\/w-wpolo\/spec-rel\/010518aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">first<\/a> in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women\u2019s Water Polo Preseason Coaches\u2019 poll. The Cardinal, who have captured NCAA titles in five of the past seven years, are about as good a bet for success as there is in the sport. In the 22-year existence of a national championship, no other conference has ever claimed the title, and only once \u2014 in 2004, when USC beat Loyola Marymount 10-8 \u2014has a non-MPSF team played in the title game.<\/p>\n<p>In last year\u2019s finals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/steffens-goal-all-around-effort-leads-stanford-past-ucla-in-2017-ncaa-title-match\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford beat UCLA <\/a>8-7 on a last second goal by senior <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong>. That win\u2014the Cardinal\u2019s third championship earned at the Bruins\u2019 expense the past four years\u2014closed the books on a couple of key participants.\u00a0 Steffens has now graduated and will <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynewshungary.com\/us-olympic-world-champion-maggie-steffens-signed-contract-hungarian-club\/\" target=\"_blank\">play professionally<\/a> in Hungary for <span class=\"st\">UVSE<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brandon Brooks<\/strong>, who helmed UCLA to NCAA finals in 2014, 2015 and 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uclas-brooks-steps-down-after-8-seasons-stanford-is-likely-culprit\/\" target=\"_blank\">resigned<\/a> last May. Brooks was replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/on-the-record-with-uclas-adam-wright\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Adam Wright<\/strong><\/a>, who steered the Bruins\u2019 men\u2019s team to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gritty-defensive-effort-pays-off-for-ucla\/\" target=\"_blank\">NCAA title<\/a> last December.<\/p>\n<p>Fear not for Tanner; three of his current players\u2014 <strong>Makenzie Fischer<\/strong>, <strong>Aria Fischer<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan Raney<\/strong> \u2014 were on the roster of the U.S. Women\u2019s Senior National Team that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-women-grab-2nd-straight-fina-world-championship-with-13-6-win-over-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\">captured gold <\/a>at the 2017 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing second in the voting by MPSF head coaches was Cal, helmed by <strong>Coralee Simmons<\/strong>. Now in her second year, Simmon&#8217;s team returns three All-Americans\u2014 <strong>Dora Antal,<\/strong> <strong>Anna Illes<\/strong> and <strong>Emma Wright<\/strong> \u2014 and comes off a strong showing at the 2017 MPSF tournament where the Golden Bears pushed #1 UCLA to the limit before falling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/04\/30\/1-ucla-hangs-beat-cal-advance-mpsf-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">9-8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tied for third is USC, which must deal with an exodus of talent, including the <strong>Haralabidis<\/strong> twins (<strong>Ioanna<\/strong> and <strong>Stephania<\/strong>), and All-American <strong>Brigitta Games<\/strong>, and Wright\u2019s UCLA squad, which also lost three All-Americans; <strong>Rachel Fattal<\/strong>, <strong>Kodi Hill<\/strong>, <strong>Alys Williams<\/strong>. Trojan Head Coach <strong>Jovan Vavic<\/strong> returns All-American <strong>Brianna Daboub<\/strong> and <strong>Maud Megens<\/strong> as well as goalies <strong>Amanda Longan<\/strong> and <strong>Vict\u00f3ria Chamorro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Returning Bruins include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/genrel\/010318aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Maggie Musselman<\/strong><\/a>, perhaps the most heralded sophomore in the country, and goalie <strong>Carlee Kapana<\/strong>. Both are members of Team USA; Musselman was named MVP at last year\u2019s World Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona State came in fifth; the Sun Devils have a tall order in looking to leapfrog at least two schools to return to NCAAs for the first time since 2016. Luckily, Head Coach <strong>Todd Clapper<\/strong> can structure his offense around <strong>Lena Mihailovic<\/strong>, their prolific scorer, and his defense behind goalie <strong>Mia Rycraw<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling up the poll\u2019s rear was San Jose State. <strong>Gabor Sarusi&#8217;s<\/strong> squad will look to improve on a 10-19 finish (1-5 MPSF) in 2017 by winning more than one match in conference play. Given that CSU Bakersfield, the Spartan&#8217;s sole victim last season, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bakersfield.com\/sports\/csub-announces-the-end-of-women-s-water-polo-and\/article_d21827a4-ef57-5d60-a2c2-2c89d66f21fa.html\" target=\"_blank\">eliminated<\/a> women\u2019s water polo, they will be hard pressed to achieve that.
