PHOENIX, Arizona, December 15. CESAR Cielo was the highlight of Brazil’s open long course meet today, posting a 48.42 in the 100 freestyle. The time is well off the 47.84 he swam at Pan Ams in October, but it’s likely that Cielo is training through the meet. Most notably, the time is a couple of tenths faster than James Magnussen went earlier this week in Australia.<\/p>\n
The meet is serving as one of about five opportunities for Brazilians to qualify for the Olympic team, as the country does not hold an official Olympic Trials. Worlds and Pan Ams were two of those qualifying meets, and people like Cielo and Thiago Pereira are just a few that have already earned their place on the roster. Nicolas Nilo and Henrique Barbosa also got on the roster with a couple of fast swims. Nilo swam a 48.71 in the 100 free to place second behind Cielo, just a few hundredths under the qualifying time. Brazil is still looking to qualify for the 400 free relay in London, since they did not place in the top eight at the world championships. Based on cumulative times, they might have fielded a team fast enough to swim in London.<\/p>\n
Barbosa got under 2:10 in the 200 breast, swimming a 2:09.82 in yesterday’s prelims for eighth in the world rankings. Barbosa was removed from the world championship roster after a positive drug test earlier this year, and with his name cleared of wrongdoing, now looks like he’ll be going to London.<\/p>\n
Henrique Rodrigues, who is already likely on the Brazilian Olympic team after his 1:59.5 from worlds, swam a 1:59.79 today, his third time under two minutes this year. You can read more about the first day of the Brazil Open at swimmingworld.com.
\nLater tonight, the Chesapeake Elite Pro-Am starts in Oklahoma City, and a few notable pro swimmers will attend for the chance to earn some additional holiday spending money. Anthony Ervin is swimming in his first non-Masters meet in a few years, and he’s signed up for the 50 and 100 freestyles. Ervin will have some big competition in those races, with people like Jason Dunford, Josh Schneider and Simon Burnett entered. Other top names to look out for at the meet include Eugene Godsoe, Ed Moses, Robert Margalis, David Plummer, Jillian Tyler and Christine Jennings. The meet will feature a $600 prize for an overall first place finish for pro swimmers, but that amount will be doubled for the winners of the 1650, and for the winners of the special 50 free elimination shootout.
