LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 12. WITH returning Gemma Mengual added to the line-up (she had retired after Rome 2009), Spain successfully defended their 2010 title at the 6th FINA Synchronised Swimming World Trophy, taking place at Beijing's Water Cube from December 9-11, 2011.<\/p>\n
The competition programme included a Synchro Highlight Routine and Thematic Duet (Dec. 9), Thematic Team (Dec. 10) and Free Combination (Dec. 11), the classification being made by totalling the scores of the four events. The Solo Exhibition on day 2 was not judged.<\/p>\n
The Spanish-Chinese rivalry played out throughout the three-day competition, with both synchro powerhouses sweeping two events. The squad from the host federation struck her first golds in the Synchro Highlight Routine and Thematic Duet while Spain triumphed in the Thematic Team and Free Combination events. Bouncing back from Shanghai, where they failed to maintain their world No.2 status, the Spaniards leapfrogged the Chinese, for a total 386.665. Runner-up China finished with a cumulative score of 384.102.<\/p>\n
Two remarkable milestones for the Canadian squad were a silver medal in the Free Combination and a finish ahead of the powerful Russian team, for an overall 377.614. Third after day 1 (with two bronze), Russia lost a dramatic spot in the general standings, after taking sixth in the two following events.<\/p>\n
Absent in the 2010 edition, Italy and USA both had convincing performances in Beijing, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.<\/p>\n
