THE Texas Invitational got off to a fast start with a near-NCAA record performance by USC&#39;s Katinka Hosszu in the women&#39;s 200-yard IM.<\/p>\n<p>Hosszu took a run at the NCAA record in the women&#39;s 200 IM with a blazing time of 1:52.71.  That swim missed Julia Smit&#39;s American\/NCAA standard of 1:52.31 set in Long Beach in 2010, but pushed Hosszu to second all time in the event&#39;s history.  Her previous lifetime best had been a third-ranked 1:53.39 at the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships.  She leapfrogged Kathleen Hersey, who had stood second with a 1:53.33. Smit owns the two other sub-1:53 times with the record at 1:52.31 and a 1:52.79 from NCAAs in March 2011. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Stanford&#39;s Maya DiRado posted an NCAA A cut time with a second-place 1:54.66 to match her all-time 15th-ranked effort from NCAAs. Texas&#39; Karlee Bispo earned third-place kudos tonight in 1:56.51. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#39;s Cory Chitwood followed up with a scorcher of his own.  He clocked a 1:41.92 to win the men&#39;s 200 IM, and move into a sixth-ranked tie with Ricky Berens in the all-time rankings. Arizona&#39;s Austen Thompson touched second in 1:43.42, while USC&#39;s Dimitri Colupaev earned third in 1:44.10.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#39;s Sam Woodward, Andi Murez, Betsy Webb and Maddy Schaefer opened up the meet with an automatic qualifying time of 1:28.20 in the women&#39;s 200 free relay. Arizona&#39;s Margo Geer, Kait Flederbach, Emma Darlington and Sarah Denninghoff finished second in 1:28.66, just off the A cut, while Texas&#39; Karlee Bispo, Bethany Adams, Kelsey Amundsen and Ellen Lobb finished third in 1:29.15.<\/p>\n<p>USC&#39;s Vlad Morozov, Dimitry Colupaev, Jack Wagner and Jeff Daniels edged Arizona&#39;s Kelley Wyman, Mitchell Friedemann, Giles Smith and Tommy Gutman by the slimmest of margins, 1:17.58 to 1:57.59, for the men&#39;s 200 free relay victory.  Both teams cleared the NCAA A cut. Texas&#39; Jimmy Feigen, Dax Hill, Clay Youngquist and Kerrington Hill placed third in 1:17.74.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#39;s Alyssa Anderson cruised to victory in the women&#39;s 500 free with a 4:36.78 to far surpass the NCAA A cut.  That swim put her second behind Stephanie Peacock (4:35.73) for the top time in the country this year. USC&#39;s Haley Anderson touched second tonight in 4:38.73 for third in the rankings, while Stanford&#39;s Andie Taylor picked up third in 4:40.81.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#39;s Sam Woodward jumped to the top of the NCAA rankings in the women&#39;s 100 fly with a winning 52.06. She moved in front of Genny Konicke&#39;s 52.66. UNLV&#39;s Katelyne Herrington took second tonight and in the rankings with a 52.43, while Stanford&#39;s Felicia Lee placed third in 52.63 for third in the rankings as well. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#39;s Giles Smith (46.13) and USC&#39;s Chase Bloch (46.83) moved to first and second in the NCAA rankings with a 1-2 finish in the men&#39;s 100 fly. David Nolan had owned the top time so far with a 47.04. Texas&#39; Neil Caskey took third in 47.26 tonight. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#39;s Matt Barber snared the men&#39;s 500 free title in 4:16.61, while USC&#39;s Chad Bobrosky took second in 4:18.65. Texas&#39; Jackson Wilcox finished third in 4:18.75 \u2013 all among the top five in the NCAA rankings this year.<\/p>\n<p>After clocking a 21.94 in prelims to lead the way, Arizona&#39;s Margo Geer won the women&#39;s 50 free finale in 22.02. USC&#39;s Kasey Carlson continued to develop as a sprinter with a 22.10 for second, while Stanford&#39;s Sam Woodward wound up third in 22.13. <\/p>\n<p>USC&#39;s Vlad Morozov turned in a 19.35 to claim the men&#39;s 50 free, and eclipse the NCAA A standard. Texas&#39;s Jimmy Feigen finished second in 19.55, while Arizona&#39;s Kelley Wyman posted a third-place 19.57. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#39;s Sarah Denninghoff, Ellyn Baumgardner, Aubrey Peacock and Margo Geer won the women&#39;s 400 medley relay in 3:31.65, while USC&#39;s Joan Christel Simms, Kasey Carlson, Yumi So and Katinka Hosszu took second in 3:31.92.  Arizona&#39;s Cory Chitwood, Kevin Cordes, Giles Smith and Kelley Wyman claimed the men&#39;s 400 medley relay in 3:06.98, while USC&#39;s Alex Lendrum, Dimitri Colupaev, Chase Bloch and Vlad Morozov posted a 3:08.47 for second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a photo gallery from the event, click here.
