On the final night of the 2017 European Short Course Championships a World Junior record fell twice, two Championship records were broken, and the night ended in a World Record. Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>and Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>highlighted the action.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Freestyle Semi-Final<\/h3>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>took the first semifinal in a 23.62. France’s\u00a0Charlotte Bonnett\u00a0<\/strong>was a quarter second behind her in 23.88 while Russian\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 23.93 for third in that first heat.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>powered to a 23.39 to take the second semifinal. She’ll be the top seed in the final, her time only .07 shy of the Championship record, a 23.32 set in 2009 by the Netherlands’\u00a0Hinkelien Schreuder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ current leading sprinter\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind Sjostrom in 23.53. She’ll be the second seed overall. Blume, Bonnett, and Nasretdinova hold the third through fifth spots. Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva\u00a0<\/strong>(24.03), the Netherlands’\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>(24.17) and Finland’s\u00a0Mimosa Jallow\u00a0<\/strong>(24.17) will also race in the final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Backstroke Semi-Final<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>set a World Junior Record of 23.10 this morning en route to the top seed. Tonight, he held his top spot, but was a hair slower, clocking a 23.14. Taking the second spot into finals is Romanian\u00a0Robert-Andrei Glinta\u00a0<\/strong>in 23.21.\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>of Belarus posted the third fastest time, a 23.28.<\/p>\n

It will be a tight final, with three more men only a tenth behind: Italy’s\u00a0Simone Sabbioni\u00a0<\/strong>(23.31), Romania’s\u00a0Catalin-Paul Ungur\u00a0<\/strong>(23.34), and France’s\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>(23.35). Also rounding out the final will be Poland’s\u00a0Kacper Stokowski\u00a0<\/strong>(23.42) and Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>(23.64).<\/p>\n

The final will begin in just over an hour.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breaststroke Final<\/h3>\n

Spaniard\u00a0Jessica Vall Montero\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 breaststroke with a 2:18.41. Her teammate\u00a0Marina Garcia Urzainqui\u00a0<\/strong>was disqualified. Denmark’s\u00a0Rikke Moeller Pedersen\u00a0<\/strong>raced to second in 2:19.53, just ahead of Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse\u00a0<\/strong>in 2:19.68 with bronze.<\/p>\n

With a strong last 100 meters Russian\u00a0Vitalina Simonova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:20.06) touched fourth. German’s\u00a0Jessica Steiger<\/strong>,\u00a0Jocelyn Ulyett\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain (2:21.07) and France’s\u00a0Fanny Deberghes\u00a0<\/strong>(2:23.90) completed the final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Freestyle Final<\/h3>\n

Italian\u00a0Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>raced to a 46.11 for the European title in the 100 freestyle. He was nearly a half second ahead of the competition.\u00a0Pieter Timmers\u00a0<\/strong>of Belgium earned silver with a 46.54. Rounding out the podium, also under 47 seconds was\u00a0Duncan Scott<\/strong>\u00a0of Great Britain\u00a0<\/strong>in a 46.64.<\/p>\n

The next trio were tightly bunched: Poland’s\u00a0Konrad Czerniak\u00a0<\/strong>(47.01), Lithuania’s Simonas Bilis\u00a0<\/strong>(47.09) and Hungary’s\u00a0Dominik Kozma\u00a0<\/strong>(47.13). Russia’s\u00a0Mikhail Vekovishchev\u00a0<\/strong>(47.51) and Hungary’s\u00a0Nandor Nemeth\u00a0<\/strong>(47.60) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Butterfly Final<\/h3>\n

In her second race of the night Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>won the 100 butterfly. The Olympic gold medalist destroyed the field, winning the event by nearly a second. Her 55.00 was a new Championship record.<\/p>\n

France’s\u00a0Marie Wattel\u00a0<\/strong>earned runner up honors in 55.97. Denmark’s\u00a0Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the podium with a 56.22.<\/p>\n

Taking fourth was Sjostrom’s fellow countrywoman\u00a0Louise Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(56.56). Italy’s\u00a0Ilaria Bianchi\u00a0<\/strong>touched fifth with a 56.65. In sixth through eighth were Belgium’s\u00a0Kimberly Buys\u00a0<\/strong>(56.87), the Netherlands’\u00a0Elinore De Jong\u00a0<\/strong>(57.13) and Germany’s\u00a0Aliena Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>(57.17).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 IM Final<\/h3>\n

The Italian men took their second gold in a row.\u00a0Marco Orsi\u00a0<\/strong>led three men under 52 seconds. He stopped the clock in 51.76 to earn gold. Russia’s\u00a0Sergei Fesikov\u00a0<\/strong>earned silver in 51.94. Powered by the fastest final 50 meters in the field the Netherlands’\u00a0Kyle Stolk\u00a0<\/strong>cleared 52 with his 51.99.<\/p>\n

Belgian\u00a0Emmanuel Vanluchene\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth with a 52.75 and Israel’s\u00a0Yakov Yan Toumarkin\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth in 52.91.<\/p>\n

Wrapping up the final heat were\u00a0Bernhard Reitshammer\u00a0<\/strong>of Austria (53.01), Poland’s\u00a0Michal Chudy\u00a0<\/strong>(53.02), and Italy’s\u00a0Simone Geni\u00a0<\/strong>(53.15).<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Freestyle Final<\/h3>\n

Two women were under the four minute marker in the final of the 400 freestyle. Hungarian\u00a0Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>got her hand to the wall first. She touched in 3:58.15. Just under a second behind her was Germany’s\u00a0Sarah Koehler\u00a0<\/strong>in 3:59.12. Liechenstein’s\u00a0Julia Hassler\u00a0<\/strong>finished third with a 4:02.43 to take the bronze medal.<\/p>\n

Spain’s\u00a0Melanie Costa Schmid\u00a0<\/strong>(4:04.47) and Portugal’s\u00a0Diana Margarida Duraes\u00a0<\/strong>battled for fourth as the duo finished in 4:04.47 and 4:04.61 respectively.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Kathryn Greenslade\u00a0<\/strong>(4:06.05), Italy’s\u00a0Simona Quadarella\u00a0<\/strong>(4:07.34) and Russian\u00a0Veronika Andrusenko\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.50) were sixth, seventh, and eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Butterfly Final<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Kharlanov\u00a0<\/strong>touched the wall in 1:50.54 to win the gold medal in the 200 fly.\u00a0Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>of Greece won the silver with a 1:51.23, a full second ahead of the third place finisher: Hungary’s\u00a0Tamas Kenderesi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52.25).<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Viktor Bromer\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52.75) was fourth. Nearly four seconds from his own Championship and European record of 1:49.00 Hungary’s\u00a0Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth in 1:52.96.<\/p>\n

Joeri Verlinden\u00a0<\/strong>of the Netherlands (1:53.07), Estonia’s\u00a0Kregor Kirk\u00a0<\/strong>(1:53.58) and Norway’s\u00a0Tomoe Zanimoto Hvas\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.11) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Freestyle Final<\/h3>\n

In her third race of the night,\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>won the 50 freestyle. Her 23.30 is a new Championship record, just faster than the 23.32 swum by the Netherlands’\u00a0Hinkelien Schreuder <\/strong>in 2009. That was Sjostrom’s second Championship record in as many swims.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands took two of the top four spots in the event.\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>was also under the old Championship record, only .01 behind Sjostrom. She touched in 23.31. Her reaction time was also .01 slower than Sjostrom’s.<\/p>\n

Tied for the fastest reaction time in the field (.61), Denmark’s\u00a0Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>settled for third with her 23.49. Kromowidjojo’s teammate\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 23.82.<\/p>\n

Russians\u00a0Maria Kameneva <\/strong>and\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova\u00a0<\/strong>were fifth and seventh in 23.88 and 23.99, respectively.\u00a0Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>of France posted a 23.94 for sixth and Finland’s\u00a0Mimosa Jallow\u00a0<\/strong>(24.20) was eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Backstroke Final<\/h3>\n

Despite emerging from both prelims and semifinals with the top seed, Russian\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>could not hold on in the finals. He touched second in 23.07, just .02 behind Italy’s\u00a0Simone Sabbioni\u00a0<\/strong>with a 23.05.<\/p>\n

Kolesnikov suffered by far the slowest reaction time in the field, a .88, with the next slowest being a .63. Despite this, he still lowered his own World Junior and European Junior records, 23.10, set in prelims.<\/p>\n

France’s\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>earned the bronze in 23.12, out touching Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>(23.13) by .01.<\/p>\n

Romanians\u00a0Robert-Andrei Glinta\u00a0<\/strong>(23.19) and\u00a0Catalin-Paul Ungur\u00a0<\/strong>(23.42) were fifth and seventh. Poland’s\u00a0Kacper Stokowski\u00a0<\/strong>(23.28) and Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>(23.48) touched sixth and eighth.<\/p>\n

Women’s 4×50 Medley Relay Finals<\/h3>\n

There was no stopping\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>tonight. In her fourth race of the under two hour finals session she split a 24.27 on the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay.\u00a0Hanna Rosvall\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 26.96 on the backstroke, followed by\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong>‘s 29.30 breaststroke leg.\u00a0Michelle Coleman\u00a0<\/strong>anchored the Swedish women to gold with her 23.90. The team topped the podium with their 1:44.43.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Julie Kepp Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>(26.97),\u00a0Rikke Moeller Pedersen\u00a0<\/strong>(30.00),\u00a0Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>(24.82) and\u00a0Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>(23.21) earned silver in 1:45.00. With a 1:45.35 the French team of\u00a0Mathilde Cini\u00a0<\/strong>(26.72),\u00a0Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>(30.01),\u00a0Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>(24.80), and\u00a0Marie Wattel\u00a0<\/strong>(23.82) earned bronze.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands were fourth with a 1:45.39, just .04 behind the French team.\u00a0Powered by the fastest backstroke split in the field, a 26.29 from\u00a0Alicja Tchorz\u00a0<\/strong>the team from Poland touched fifth in 1:45.63.<\/p>\n

Italy (1:45.73), Russia (1:45.75) and Finland (1:46.22) wrapped up the final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 4×50 Medley Relay Finals<\/h3>\n

The team from Russia ended the meet with a bang, turning in a new world record.<\/p>\n

Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>got up for another 50 backstroke, this time lowering his reaction time and destroying his own World Junior record with a 22.83.<\/p>\n

He was followed by\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>in 25.26,\u00a0Aleksandr Popkov\u00a0<\/strong>(22.11) and\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(20.24) as the quartet posted a 1:30.44. Their time was .07 faster than the 1:30.51 Brazil posted in Doha in 2014.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Simone Sabbioni\u00a0<\/strong>(23.14),\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>(25.45),\u00a0Piero Codia<\/strong> (22.72), and\u00a0Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>(20.60) were second in 1:31.91.<\/p>\n

Taking bronze was Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>(23.16),\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich\u00a0<\/strong>(25.48),\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong> (22.23), and\u00a0Anton Latkin\u00a0<\/strong>(21.19) in a 1:32.06.<\/p>\n

Poland was fourth (1:32.39) and Germany finished fifth in 1:32.38. In sixth through eighth were Turkey (1:33.18), the Netherlands (1:33.76) and Finland (1:34.28).<\/p>\n
