PHOENIX, Arizona, November 22. THE University of Maryland officially announced that eight sports programs would be cut at the end of June 2012, with men’s and women’s swimming and diving on that list. <\/p>\n
But there is some hope for the Terps. The school’s president and athletic director also mentioned in their announcement that the teams have the opportunity to raise money to keep their sports around for eight more years. After that, the teams will need to be endowed, or risk getting cut again. The Washington Post reported today that swimming and diving would need to raise $11.6 million by next June, and that the school’s booster program has already procured $1 million, though that amount might be spread out among all eight of the cut teams. The University of Maryland announced the cuts as a way to reduce their multimillion dollar budget deficit.<\/p>\n
