During the second night of finals at the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>set his third world junior record of the week and his first European record in the 100 back semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, stars like\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> each won a gold medal, while\u00a0Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>put up a stellar effort in the men’s 200 free, while it was an uneven night for\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, who qualified for two finals but missed out on the top eight in one of her signature events.<\/p>\n

Kromowidjojo actually raced four times, twice in semi-finals before winning gold in back-to-back races to end the session.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Fly Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top time in the semi-finals of the women’s 50 fly at 25.28, but the biggest surprise came with Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>finishing tied for ninth in 25.80.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom was scheduled for a busy night that also included the women’s 100 free semi-finals, women’s 100 IM semi-finals and potentially the 50 fly final, but she is now out of an event in which she has won the last two long course World titles.<\/p>\n

Joining Kromowidjojo in the center lanes for the final, scheduled for later in the evening, were Denmark’s\u00a0Emilie Beckmann<\/strong>\u00a0(25.33), Poland’s\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk<\/strong>\u00a0(25.51) and Kromowidjojo’s countrywoman\u00a0Maaike De Waard\u00a0<\/strong>(25.60).<\/p>\n

Other finalists included Germany’s\u00a0Aliena Schmidtke<\/strong>\u00a0(25.62), France’s\u00a0Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>(25.66), Belarus’\u00a0Anastasiya Shkurdai<\/strong>\u00a0(25.74) and Belgium’s\u00a0Kimberly Buys\u00a0<\/strong>(25.78). Sjostrom, who tied with Finland’s\u00a0Mimosa Jallow<\/strong>, missed the final by two hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n

\"women-50-fly-semis\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lithuania’s\u00a0Danas Rapsys<\/strong>\u00a0dominated the field in the men’s 200 free at the European Short Course Championships, finishing in a quick 1:40.85. He never trailed, and Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Krasnykh<\/strong>, who won the 400 free on day one, had no chance of catching up.<\/p>\n

Krasnykh finished second in 1:42.22, coming on strong over the back half after sitting in sixth at the halfway point, while Great Britain’s\u00a0Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>took the bronze in 1:43.07.<\/p>\n

Estonia’s\u00a0Kregor Zirk\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 1:43.84, followed by the Netherlands’\u00a0Kyle Stolk<\/strong>\u00a0(1:44.03) and Ireland’s\u00a0Jordan Sloan<\/strong>\u00a0(1:44.12). Sloan was in third place with 50 meters to go before fading badly.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Mikhail Dovgalyuk<\/strong>\u00a0(1:44.41) and Italy’s\u00a0Fabio Lombini\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.05) rounded out the final.<\/p>\n

\"men-200-free-final\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>fended off a late push from Germany’s\u00a0Marco Koch\u00a0<\/strong>to secure the European short course title in the men’s 200 breast. Prigoda finished in 2:01.11, and Koch, despite a 31.55 final 50, took second in 2:01.52.<\/p>\n

Another Russian,\u00a0Mikhail Dorinov<\/strong>, took the bronze medal in 2:01.85.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>was the closest to the medalists, finishing in 2:02.46, and he was followed by Sweden’s\u00a0Erik Persson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.86), Germany’s\u00a0Fabien Schwingenschlogl\u00a0<\/strong>(2:04.67), Hungary’s\u00a0David Horvath\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.16) and Estonia’s\u00a0Martin Allikvee\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.95).<\/p>\n

\"men-200-breast-final\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

France’s\u00a0Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>led the way into a star-studded final of the women’s 100 free at the European Champs, touching in 51.71 for the top seed in Frdiay’s final.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Pernille Blume<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in the 50 free, claimed the second seed in 52.09, one hundredth ahead of the Netherlands’\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>(52.10).<\/p>\n

France’s\u00a0Marie Wattel\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 52.35, ahead of the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>(52.49) and\u00a0Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>(52.65). Kromowidjojo had already qualified first in the 50 fly semis, while Sjostrom missed that final.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>took seventh in 52.85, and Russia’s\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova\u00a0<\/strong>edged out Sweden’s\u00a0Louise Hansson<\/strong>\u00a0for the eighth spot, 53.02 to 53.19.<\/p>\n

\"women-100-free-semi\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Peter Bernek\u00a0<\/strong>pulled ahead from the first 50 meters in the men’s 400 IM final at the European Championships, and no one else could ever come close. He finished in 3:59.47 to secure the gold medal by more than 3.5 second.<\/p>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Phillip Heintz\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 4:03.16, and Hungary’s\u00a0Gergely Gyurta\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 4:06.33. Gyurta faded badly down the stretch but had enough of an advantage to hold off Spain’s\u00a0Marc Sanchez Torrens<\/strong>, who ended up fourth in 4:06.73.<\/p>\n

Spain’s\u00a0Joan Lluis Pons Ramon<\/strong>\u00a0(4:07.99), Germany’s\u00a0Jacob Heidtmann<\/strong>\u00a0(4:08.56), Italy’s\u00a0Federico Turrini\u00a0<\/strong>(4:09.11) and Portugal’s\u00a0Joao Alexandre Vital\u00a0<\/strong>(4:09.19) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n

\"men-400-im-final\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For the second day in a row, Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>did not come close to her world record in one of her signature events, and once again, that did not matter. The Hungarian used a 28.52 back-half split, by far the quickest in the field, to take gold in the women’s 100 back.<\/p>\n

Hosszu’s time was 55.66, about a half-second off her three-year-old world record of 55.03. But the Netherlands’\u00a0Kira Toussaint<\/strong>, who had been the top seed coming into the final, could not keep pace with that and had to settle for ailver in 56.21.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva<\/strong>\u00a0finished with the bronze medal in 57.01, just ahead of Ukraine’s\u00a0Daryna Zevina<\/strong>\u00a0(57.08).<\/p>\n

The Czech Republic’s\u00a0Simona Baumrtova\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 57.27, followed by Denmark’s\u00a0Mie Nielsen\u00a0<\/strong>(57.39) and Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong>\u00a0(57.55). France’s\u00a0Mathilde Cini<\/strong>\u00a0was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Back Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>broke his third world junior record in two days at the European Short Course Championships, taking down his own mark in the men’s 100 back semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Kolesnikov touched in 49.25, a full second ahead of No. 2 seed\u00a0Simone Sabbioni<\/strong>\u00a0of Italy (50.26) and more than a half-second under his previous WJR of 49.84 set last month. Kolesnikov could take aim at the European record (Stanislav Donets<\/strong>, 48.95) or even the\u00a0world record (Matt Grevers<\/strong>, 48.92) in the final.<\/p>\n

After Kolesnikov and Sabbioni, Romania’s\u00a0Robert Glinta\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 50.30, ahead of Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>(50.41) and Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong>\u00a0(50.60). Greece’s\u00a0Apostolos Christou\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Poland’s\u00a0Kacper Stokowski<\/strong>\u00a0tied for sixth in 50.67, and Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Shabaov\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth in 50.76.<\/p>\n

\"men-100-back-semi\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 IM Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Just 20 minutes after winning gold in the women’s 100 back,\u00a0Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>was back in the pool for the 100 IM semis, and she easily finished first in a time of 57.64. That was almost a full second slower than her prelims time of 56.75, but she is still comfortably seeded first for the final.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>continued her busy evening, touching second in 59.40. Sjostrom missed the 50 fly final but did qualify for the next round in both the 100 free and now the 100 IM. Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind Sjostrom with a time of 59.43.<\/p>\n

Norway’s\u00a0Susann Bjornsen\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 59.65, while Hungary’s\u00a0Evelyn Verraszto\u00a0<\/strong>(59.85), Israel’s\u00a0Amit Ivri\u00a0<\/strong>(59.98) and the Netherlands’\u00a0Marrit Steenbergen\u00a0<\/strong>(59.98) also broke 1:00.<\/p>\n

Austria’s\u00a0Lena Kreundl<\/strong>\u00a0was the last woman into the final at 1:00.14.<\/p>\n

\"women-100-im-semis\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Matteo Rivolta\u00a0<\/strong>touched out countryman\u00a0Piero Codia\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0the win in the men’s 100 fly at the European Championships for Italy’s first gold of the meet and an impressive 1-2 finish.<\/p>\n

Rivolta finished in 49.93, just three hundredths ahead of Codia. Close behind was\u00a0Marius Kusch<\/strong>, and his time of 50.01 was good enough for bronze.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Sadovnikov\u00a0<\/strong>just missed the medals with his time of 50.19. Places five through eight were occupied by the Netherlands’\u00a0Joeri Verlinden\u00a0<\/strong>(50.25), Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Kharlanov\u00a0<\/strong>(50.29), Poland’s\u00a0Konrad Czerniak\u00a0<\/strong>(50.31) and\u00a0Belarus’\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong>\u00a0(50.77), respectively.<\/p>\n

\"men-100-fly-final\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 Free FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Sarah Koehler\u00a0<\/strong>led for most of the race in the women’s 800 free final at the European Short Course Championships, but she could never quite escape Hungary’s\u00a0Boglarka Kapas<\/strong>. Still, Koehler had enough down the stretch to secure the win.<\/p>\n

Koehler touched in 8:10.65, about a half second ahead of Kapas (8:11.13). Italy’s\u00a0Simona Quadarella\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 8:16.53.<\/p>\n

Liechtenstein’s\u00a0Julia Hassler\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 8:18.28, just ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Anastasia Kiprichnikova\u00a0<\/strong>(8:18.44). Other competing in the final included Slovenia’s\u00a0Tjasa Oder\u00a0<\/strong>(8:20.70), Portugal’s\u00a0Diana Margarida Duares\u00a0<\/strong>(8:26.35) and Slovenia’s\u00a0Katja Fain<\/strong>\u00a0(8:27.39).<\/p>\n

\"women-800-final\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 fly FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Competing in a field without\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, who missed out on the final, the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>dominated the final of the women’s 50 fly, touching in 24.78 for a gold medal.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 25.16, and the Netherlands’\u00a0Maaike De Waard\u00a0<\/strong>also got on the podium to make it a 1-3 finish for her country.<\/p>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Aleina Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>(25.49), France’s\u00a0Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>(25.59), Belgium’s\u00a0Kimberly Buys<\/strong>\u00a0(25.59), Belarus’\u00a0Anastasiya Shkurdai\u00a0<\/strong>(25.69) and Poland’s\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk\u00a0<\/strong>(25.72) also swam in the championship heat.<\/p>\n

\"women-50-fly-final\"<\/p>\n

Mixed 4×50 Medley Relay FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mere minutes after winning gold in the 50 fly, the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>was back in the water to anchor the Netherlands to a stunning win in the mixed 4×50 medley relay. Going off less than 15 minutes rest, Kromowidjojo split 23.09 — more than a second quicker than Belarus anchor\u00a0Yuliya Khitraya<\/strong>\u00a0— to give the Dutch the touch-out win, 1:37.71 to 1:37.74. France was just one hundredth behind the Dutch in 1:37.75<\/p>\n

The Netherlands squad also consisted of\u00a0Kira Toussaint\u00a0<\/strong>(26.13),\u00a0Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>(26.03) and\u00a0Joeri Verlinden<\/strong>\u00a0(22.26). Along with Kromowidjojo, the team broke Italy’s championship record of 1:38.33 set back in 2015.<\/p>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich<\/strong>\u00a0(22.89),\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich\u00a0<\/strong>(25.32),\u00a0Anastasiya Shkurdai\u00a0<\/strong>(25.28) and Khitraya (24.25) settled for silver. France’s team consisted of\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>(22.94),\u00a0Theo Bussiere\u00a0<\/strong>(49.19),\u00a0Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>(25.39) and\u00a0Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>(23.17).<\/p>\n

Germany’s team of\u00a0Christian Diener<\/strong>,\u00a0Fabien Schwingenschlogl<\/strong>,\u00a0Aliena Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jessica Steiger\u00a0<\/strong>just missed the medals by eight hundredths, touching in 1:37.83. Denmark was not far away either, finishing in 1:38.03, while Poland (1:38.22), Finland (1:38.80) and Italy (1:39.43) rounded out the final.<\/p>\n
